Description: This is a very good hardcover copy long ago released from a library, so rebound in black buckram, with title in gilt on the spine, also a number at the base of the spine. NO other library marks or pockets, etc. The title page has a bit of oxidation to the top of the page. This very soft paper typically attracts foxing. Very clean throughout. A few edge tears now closed. The color plates are printed on white glossy sheets and are fine. 36 color plates + 121 black & white illustrations + 27 figures in the text. 11" high X 8" wide, 189 pages + ads. Published "for the reform of advertising," the author states that advertising is to trade, "what steam is to machinery, the grand propelling power." Amply illustrated here with B&W images and beautiful adverts that have held their color. Chapters ("Reform and Its Foes," "Steamship Hotels and the Sea," "Architecture and Advertising") fall under "Part I: Ideas, Principals, and Methods" and "Part II: Art and Life in Posters and Press Drawings." Not so much MadMen as an industry aiming "to set thought in movement and invite free public discussion." Some uncut ragged-edge pages, endpapers showing age through browning, fingerprint smudges, pencil marks up front. Corners bumped, edges worn. Boards delightful "ball and cell" design in blues/rose/sea foam with oatmeal quarter spine with darker blue lettering. Dust jacket torn top/bottom with holes along spine edges, with front showing scrape marks and overall shelf wear.
