FROM THE PUBLISHER - E. Annie Proulx's ACCORDION CRIMES is a masterpiece of storytelling that spans a century and a continent. Proulx brings the immigrant experience in America to life through the eyes of the descendants of Mexicans, Poles, Africans, Irish-Scots, Franco-Canadians and many others, all linked by their successive ownership of a simple green accordion. The music they make is their last link with the past -- voice for their fantasies, sorrows and exuberance. Proulx's prodigious knowledge, unforgettable characters and radiant language make ACCORDION CRIMES a stunning novel, exhilarating in its scope and originality. inventory #22326

Description: A highly collectible first edition, tight clean copy, protected in a new br odart wrapper, an unclipped dj, not an ex-lib. America's ethnic minorities have rarely been rendered with the insight, intuition and unsentimental candor that Proulx brings to the large canvas of characters and reaches of landscape in this ambitious work. The narrative has eight parts, each composed of short vignettes that depict the cultural baggage the attitudes, behaviors and social conditioning that immigrants brought with them, and the ways in which they joined, yet held aloof from, American society.

Description: In 1890, a Sicilian accordion maker voyages with his finest instrument to the violent port of New Orleans, where he is murdered but the accordion lives on through the lives of others who come to own it. First printing with correct full number line sequence. No writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. Spine is tight and crisp. Corners are square, if a bit bumped, and the beige boards with brown spine cloth are flat and true. There is some slight browning to the pages and very, very light soiling to the textblock edges. There is also some moisture damage along the lower 1" or so of the spine and spine cloth that has lightened the cloth and slightly puckered (but not discolored) the dust jacket. The textblock is unaffected by this moisture. Dust jacket is not price-clipped ($25.00) but does have some wear including some smudging, bumping, and microtears to the lower spine and corners, some scuffing to the back cover, the aforementioned puckering, and numerous small (1" or so) areas of various soiling including something blue on the back cover. This collectible, very good/very good, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Proulx, E. Annie. ACCORDION CRIMES - Scarce Fine Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing: Signed By Annie Proulx - SIGNED ON THE TITLE PAGE. New York City, NY: Scribner, 1996, 1996.

Price: US$44.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: 1st Printing. Signed. 381 pages. Published in 1996. The author's third novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with copies that are signed on a tipped-in page, which most copies available online are. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents E. Annie Proulx's "Accordion Crimes". A masterpiece of storytelling that spans a century and a continent. "Proulx brings the immigrant experience in America to life through the eyes of the descendants of Mexicans, Poles, Africans, Irish-Scots, Franco-Canadians, and many others, all linked by a simple green accordion. The music they make is their last link with the past, voice for their fantasies, sorrows, and exuberance. Proulx's prodigious knowledge, unforgettable characters, and radiant language make 'Accordion Crimes' a stunning novel, exhilarating in its scope and originality" (Publisher's blurb). It took Annie Proulx a very long time to write and after that, get published. "Heart Songs" appeared when she was 58 years old. Once she found her voice, it resonated with such indelible force among critics and readers in a way that many writers who have been around practically all their lives can only envy, and admire. A radical departure from Proulx's familiar Western terrain, this novel is a triumphant achievement. An absolute "must-have" title for E. Annie Proulx collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Annie Proulx. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. As such, it should NOT be confused with the Limited Edition of 2500 copies, which are signed on a tipped-in page, desirable in its own right, but surely not as collectible as a copy signed in person by the author. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Annie Proulx's signature is TINY, but it's there. There are far fewer title-page signed copies than of the Limited Edition. A scarce signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 1993 for "Postcards". Winner of the National Book Award in 1993 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for "The Shipping News". One of the finest writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANNIE PROULX TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0684833115.
