Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover. 4to. Published by Horizon Press, New York. 1959. 112 pgs. Illustrated with 50 large full-page black and white images. First Edition/First Printing. Bound in black cloth with large bold silver titles present to the spine and the front board. , Boards lightly rubbed and worn. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid. Spectacularly designed and beautifully printed, this 1959 hardbound publication was the very first comprehensive monograph on the esteemed late Chicago-based photographer Aaron Siskind. Photographs by the innovative photographer document his importance in the development of modern photography and of modern art, noting in particular his anticipation of such painters as Kline and de Kooning. "This new volume represents a decade of work by the photographer question a seminal force in the art of the 20th century. It is a renewing revelation of Beaumont Newhalls classic statement that we can only marvel that the most commonplace subject matter becomes poetic, and that the fragment becomes an artistic unit. Seen in series, the photographs have a cumulative effect: we are carried along from picture to picture: our vision is sharpened and our Imagination stimulated". EB; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 112 pages

Condition: Very Good

Description: Folio. (5) 50 plates. Original black cloth with silver and black lettering on cover, red and silver on spine, in original photo-illustrated dustjacket, red and black lettering on spine, protected by modern mylar. Light brown endpapers. Typographic title page design. With an introduction by Harold Rosenberg. Illustrated with fifty full page b/w photographs by Aaron Siskind. "This is a selection from a decade if work by one of the great masters of photography in our time. In a statement on "the essential photographic art", Aaron Siskind has said: "The start is from a previous picture. There is no preconception, rather predisposition (which predisposition includes the camera, lenses and the film with me at the time). I will usually return to a familiar place or one that seems familiar. I stand still or move slowly, feeling things like the impulse of shapes, the direction of lines, the quality of surfaces. I frame with my eye (sometimes with my hands) as the ground glass would frame. Nothing that one could reasonable call thinking is taking place at this stage. The condition is total absorption; the decision (a picture!) is spontaneous." (Publisher). Dustjacket with very light wear along edges, minor chips and light creasing. Wavy at inside top front cover of dustjacket due to water exposure, hardly visible from front. Block with some musty odor.

Price: US$650.00 + shipping

Description: Introduction by Harold Rosenberg. Folio. Black cloth with silver stamping, pictorial dust jacket. (Ca. 150pp). Numerous illustrations. Very good/good plus. Jacket edgeworn and a bit rubbed, with several archivally closed (on verso) edge tears and one wide chip running along the bottom edge of the front panel (triangular, 8½" wide X 1¼" at left side narrowing to ¼" at right side) -- fairly attractive overall despite obvious flaws. A tight, nice first edition of this scarce first photo collection by the reknowned New York and Chicago photographer (1903-91), who pioneered abstract expressionism in photography. Though not so noted, from the collection of noted Midwest photographer Archie Lieberman (1926-2008), author of "Farm Boy." A handsome copy of this desireable title.

After an initial career teaching English in public schools, Siskind joined and was actively involved in the New York Workers' Film and Photo League (1932-35) and later the Photo League (1936-41). He distanced himself from these groups in the early-forties, saying that 'the so-called documentary picture left me wanting something. For some reason or other, there was in me the desire to see the world clean and fresh and alive, as primitive things are clean and fresh and alive. He began experimenting with the medium's capacity for abstraction, making photographs of rocks, rust, graffiti and peeling plaster, echoing and influenced by his association with Franz Kline and the emerging Abstract Expressionist painters.
