A very good, clean, tight copy in original publisher's maroon cloth boards with gilt embossed facsimile signature to the front board and gilt embossed title to the spine. No inscriptions. 3 tiny splits to the rear inner hinge - probably insect damage - the largest being no more than 3mm in length - the rear board obviously still remains very firmly attached. Some light foxing to the front endpapers including the title page. The head and tail of the spine and the upper two board corners a little bumped - the cloth boards almost entirely free from soiling for fading. A very good, clean, tight copy of this first edition.

Lawrence had started to think of collecting his essays and articles toward the end of 1929. Most of the entries are from 1928-29 when Lawrence started to favour this form of writing as he got paid for better. Though he thought of calling the collection 'Chips and Faggots' he also refered to it by this current name which Secker was more in favour of.
