Description: [Bibliographical Travel] FIRST EDITION. Complete in three volumes. Octavo (26 x 17cm), pp.[8] xxxii; 462; lxxx [4]; pp.[8] 555 [5]; pp.[5] 622; lxii [4]. With a total of 146 engraved illustrations, including 83 plates, and 63 in-text. Occasional use of colour, as in the facsimile of a section from the Bayeux Tapestry, and occasional hinged plates. Also including two indexes (of Books and Manuscripts, and of Persons, Places and Things) to volume I, and the Supplement to volume III. In a later binding of tan full morocco, with gilt titles and decoration to spines, and gilt ruling to boards. All edges gilt, with green-coated endpapers. A tissue guard for each engraving, including those in-text. A mark to front pastedown of volume I where a bookplate has been carefully removed. Armorial bookplates of Hog of Newliston to other volumes. Hinges split, with repairs where applicable. A lovely crisp, clean example of the text, with hardly any spotting. Wear and browning to spines, with some rippling to upper board of volume III. Very good. The first of the inimitable Rev. Dibdin's Bibliographical Antiquarian tours, made shortly after the end of the long-running wars with France, along with everyone else and his dog who could afford it, apparently. Dibdin's tour, however, is unique in being one made with the chief purpose of admiring fine libraries across the continent, though of course architecture and local manners are considered as well. Dibdin is best-known as the founder of the Roxburghe Club, convened initially to mark the sale of the Duke of Roxburghe's famous library in June 1812, and then re-formed each year on its anniversary. It became the very first Book Club, and remains the most exclusive in the world, with no more than 40 active members at any one time.

Gold borders and corner fillets on the boards. Page edges heavily gilt. Elaborate leather foldovers to endpapers, rolled with gold decorations. The date "1821" stamped on the spines in gold. An attractive set, and remarkable for such a heavy set that it is still bound. Some mild bumps to corners. Volume 1 has 462 pages + long addenda and engravings. Volume 2 has 555 pages. Volume 3 has 621 pages plus long supplement. Volume 3 has an interior hinge repair at the rear endpaper, where the original endpaper split at the gutter and allowed the case binding to come apart. The leather hinge is not damaged. Illustrated throughout with fine engravings, both on pages alone and within the text. Each volume has a small rectangle on the inside front cover where a bookplate was neatly removed. Each has a small rubberstamped name on the bottom of the inside front cover, "Harold Phelps Stokes." Stokes was the son of NY Bank baron Anson Stokes. He went to Yale and then worked for the Hoover administration before going to work for the NY Times for many many years. He grew up on the family mansion on Madison Ave, which is now part of the Morgan Library. This set was part of the family library, kept and preserved by Stokes. Each volume measures about 8 x 11 inches. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it’s an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. This is a very heavy set, so some extra shipping will be required.

Description: First edition, 3 vols., bound in 4, 4to (279 x 185 mm), ONE OF 100 COPIES PRINTED ON THICK AND LARGE PAPER WITH EXTRA PLATES, [4], xxv, [7], 462,lxxix, [1]; [2], 555, [1]; [2], 298; [2], 299-622, lxiipp., with the author's wood-engraved device on each title-page, a wood engraving of the elaborately-quartered coat of arms of the Roxburghe Club on the dedication page, 85 engraved plates ((including the private plate of 'Diana de Poictiers' in vol. 2, which was apparently destroyed after only 50 copies had been printed, and a proof of the 'Prater' plate in vol. 3), 62 illustrations printed on fine and thin "India" paper and mounted on the text leaves, 55 other illustrations in the text, with the additional sixty engraved plates on 52 leaves from Lewis' Series of Groups bound in at the appropriate places as designated by Lewis in his 'Directions to the binder', contemporary notes in pencil to several endpapers and a few within the text, text and plates have staining of varying degrees, pale stain to many lower margins, a little damage to endpapers where bookplates have been removed, full red hard grain red morocco, covers waterstained, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Unfortunately this handsome large paper copy has suffered from water damage sometime in the past, additional photographs are available upon request. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis, of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books, manuscripts, buildings, other artefacts and people, both from past centuries and from the author's own day, for the extraordinary collection of illustrations, mostly drawn during the tour itself, and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared, leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship, especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour, and his own interpretations and conclusions, which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm, readable style and entertaining anecdotes, moreover, caught the mood of his age, making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups. was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. Lewis, most perturbed, issued them at his own expense and presented his case in the eight-page Advertisement which was separately printed. Jackson 48; 56; 56n: Windle & Pippin A38a; A44; D13.

Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776 - 1847), English bibliographer, born at Calcutta, was the son of Thomas Dibdin, the sailor brother of Charles Dibdin. Dibdin was orphaned at a young age. He was educated at St John's College, Oxford, and studied for a time at Lincoln's Inn. After an unsuccessful attempt to obtain practice as a provincial counsel at Worcester, he was ordained a clergyman at the close of 1804. Later he was appointed by Lord Liverpool to the rectory of St Mary's, Bryanston Square, which he held until his death. The first of his numerous bibliographical works was his Introduction to the Knowledge of Editions of the Classics (1802), which brought him under the notice of the second Earl Spencer, to whom he owed much important aid in his bibliographical pursuits. The rich library at Althorp was thrown open to him; he spent much of his time in it, and in 1814-1815 published his Bibliotheca Spenceriana. Bibliomania (1809), was republished with large additions in 1811, and was very popular, passing through numerous editions. To the same class belonged the Bibliographical Decameron, a larger work, which appeared in 1817. In 1810, he began the publication of a new and much extended edition of Ames's Typographical Antiquities. The first volume was a great success, but the publication was checked by the failure of the fourth volume, and was never completed. In 1818 Dibdin was commissioned by Earl Spencer to purchase books for him on the continent, an expedition described in his sumptuous Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany (1821). He returned to bibliography in his Bibliophobia, or Remarks on the Present Depression in the State of Literature and the Book Trade (1832), and the same subject furnishes the main interest of his Reminiscences of a Literary Life (1836), and his Bibliographical, Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in the Northern Counties of England and Scotland (1838). Dibdin was the originator and vice-president, Earl Spencer being the president, of the Roxburghe Club, founded in 1812, the first "book club". (Wikipedia) Sprache: english.
