TWAIN, Mark. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court. New York: Charles L. Webster, 1889.

Price: US$1075.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: TWAIN, Mark. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur s Court. New York: Charles L. Webster. 1889. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION (220 x 180 mm) pp. 575, [ii publisher ads]. Floral endpapers. Gift inscription from 1947 on front fly leaf. First edition, mix state issue but early: lacks half title on recto of frontispiece, lacks the s-shaped ornament between The and King on p. 59, has broken text on p. 72. Very minor wear to end-bands, minor scuffing to foredge, but otherwise NEAR FINE condition. In part inspired by a dream, and in part inspired by reading the 15th century Le Morte d Arthur, as many have done before him Mark Twain adapted the legends of King Arthur to reflect and comment on his own society. Like the misty origins of the tales of King Arthur, the first issue of the first edition of A Connecticut Yankee is somewhat mysterious. Its original proportions are not known and there are three states that indicate priority: an s-shaped ornament on p. 59 that was later omitted; the last two lines of p. 72 appear with perfect and broken type; and only a few copies are recorded has having the half-title printed on the recto of the frontispiece. These markers, however, appear in random combinations and the confused state of these states is evident by their presence and absences in copies personally given by Twain for Christmas in 1889. Thus, the present copy is likely not a first state, but is certainly an early one. MB422

Price: US$1200.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Handsomely bound in the publisher's original green cloth brightly decorated with gilt and embossed figures on the front boards. Bright gilt on the spine with a touch of fraying to the top and bottom of the spine ends. Attractive floral endpapers. With an amorial bookplate on the front paste-down and a small address sticker at the top of the front endpaper. Very clean and tight throughout. This is the first issue with the "S" design on p. 59, but with the later issue of broken type in the left-hand bottom corner of p 72.Two pages of ads at the end. A desirable collector's copy in the primary first issue state. "This satirical time travel fantasy was composed after Twain had read Malory's famous version of the legends of the knights of the Round Table. An unusual entry into the time-travel novels of the 19th century, featuring a fantastical (that is, unexplained and natural) means of landing in another time rather than a mechanical (science fiction) means: like Irving's Rip Van Winkle and Bellamy's Back Ward (and later, Johnson's Light Ahead for the Negro), the hero travels in time after a loss in consciousness. Here Hank travels backwards in time, rather than forward, into Arthurian England - where he uses his modern knowledge to play the part of a magician. From across the centuries Twain can use the time-honored science-fiction tradition of distance, physical or temporal, to comment obliquely on the issues of his own contemporary world." (Type Punch Matrix) First Ediiton with matching dates of 1889 on the title and copyright pages. First issue with "S" design on p. 59.

Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. In very good condition with noted provenance. Mark Twain wrote A Connecticut Yankee after reading Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur, exploring "a number of implicit parallels between Arthur's England and the American South: slavery; an agrarian economy which came into armed conflict with an industrial economy; a chivalric code which, Clemens said, was secondhand Walter Scott and kept the South mawkish, adolescent, verbose, and addicted to leatherheaded anachronisms like duels and tournaments. In both frameworks a civil war destroys the old order, and the Yankee has as acute a sense of loss as Mark Twain did" (Kaplan, 297).

Price: US$2200.00 + shipping

Description: First Edition, First Issue with the "S" on p. 59, undamaged type on page 72, and without the half-title to the recto of the frontispiece. Illustrated in black and white throughout by Dan Beard. Square 8vo, publisher’s original olive green cloth lettered in gilt and with pictorial designs in blue, black and gilt on the upper cover, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt similarly to the upper cover. xv, 575, [2 ads]. A near fine copy, tight and clean and well preserved internally, the binding and giltwork bright and clean, a few old small spots to the cloth, an abrasion to the rear cover at the fore edge. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL CLOTH. Twain's classic story of a hapless Yankee transported back in time to the court of King Arthur. The familiar characters of the Camelot legend, the monarchy, and even the church are transformed by Twain's gift for satire. Beard’s illustrations are rendered with vigor and good humor well-suited to this amusing tale. Over the years the story has been among Twain’s most often imitated with a wide range of movies, books and television episodes drawing on the theme. Even Bugs Bunny acted out the role of Twain’s Yankee hero and Bing Crosby gave him a singing voice.

Publisher's prospectus or salesman's dummy with half-title page, frontis illustration, title page, contents pages, "List of Illustrations" (explaining why there is no list of illustrations); Twain's preface, and a sampling of pages from the text interspersed with full-plate illustrations (versus inset, as they appear in the eventual publication). 16-page illustrated insert bound in at rear with 18 images -- each with a caption explaining its meaning by Fred Hall, Twain's agent at Webster. Front endpapers are marbled with one example of the leather spine option still present on pastedown (other has been removed); rear endpapers are pale-green patterned paper with brightly gilt-stamped green cloth option (including fold-in spine) affixed to pastedown. Twain, Mark.. A Connecticut Yankee in King ArthurÕs Court.. New York: Charles L. Webster. 1889., 1889.

Price: US$3000.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: The present work, along with many other popular novels of the time, was sold by subscription. Salespeople went door-to-door with dummy copies so buyers could select the binding variant they wished to order. The half morocco binding of the present work was the luxury option offered by these sellers, and is rarely found in this condition due to the softness of the morocco. A Connecticut Yankee in King ArthurÕs Court is a satire of monarchism that grapples with capitalism, technological advancement, and challenges to democratic ideals in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. It is also cited, along with the work of H.G. Wells and Edward Bellamy, as an early example of the time travel subgenre in science fiction. Octavo. [i]-[xvi], 17-575, [2 ads] pp. Illustrated throughout. PublisherÕs half morocco variant binding. Marbled edges and endpapers. Slight marginal toning. Two-inch open tear to one plate (p. 199), not touching the illustration. A clean, attractive, near-fine copy, rarely found in this condition. Blanck notes that only the earliest state of the book included a Òsmall, S-like ornamentÓ between the words in the caption ÒTHE KINGÓ on p. [59]. This copy does not have the ornamen BA 3429.
