Description: Interestingly enough, Charles Dickens heard this ghost story second hand, used it in his magazine, then was contacted by Thomas Heaphy, the original author who claimed to experience it first hand. This rare volume includes the correspondence between Thomas Heaphy and Charles Dickens as well as the story itself. A first edition that has been beautifully rebound. 6.75" x 4.25". Rebound in dark green leather by Riviere & Son (~1880), gilt titles and borders, five raised bands, A.E.G., plum endpapers. Pagination: half-title, full title page, preface, 7-87 letter/extract/narrative/story, original cover wrapper, 5 pages ads (Griffin & Farran), original rear cover. Condition: Near Fine. Spine fading from dark green to light brown. Clean and unmarked.
