[PEMBERTON (Henry)]. A View of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy.. London: Printed by S. Palmer, 1728.

Price: US$1761.19 + shipping

Description: FIRST EDITION. 4to, 288 x 218 mms., pp. [50], 407 [408 blank], engraved vignette on title-page, other engraved vignettes and illustrations in text (by John Pine after John Grison), 12 folding engraved plates, recently rebound in quarter calf, spine gilt in compartments to a floral motif, red morocco label, blue marbled boards. An attractive copy. Although Pemberton (1694 - 1771) had a medical degree, he practiced medicine only sporadically. His interest in mathematics led him to show some of his work to the mathematician John Keill, and that brought him into contact with Newton; this book was one of the results. Voltaire in his Letters concerning the English Nation (1733) made extensive use of Pemberton's commentary. The work also formed part of the mathematical tripos at Cambridge shortly after it was published. It is also notable for being the first book to use Caslon's Roman typeface. The poetic tribute by the sixteen-year-old Richard Glover, author of Leonidas (1737) and other epic poems, is usually dismissed as doggerel: raise your hands those who understood Newton at sixteen and had a command of classical literature and prosody. Pemberton returned the compliment in 1738 with one of his works on aesthetics, Observations on Poetry, especially the Epic, occasioned by the late Poem upon Leonidas; in 1753 he published Some Few Reflections on the Tragedy of Boadicea, also by Glover. Among the subscribers is one "Capt. John Price."

PEMBERTON, Henry.. A View of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy.. London: Printed by S. Palmer, 1728, 1728.

Price: US$1921.30 + shipping

Description: First edition of this popularization of Newtonian science. In collaboration with Newton, Pemberton supervised the preparation of the third edition of the Principia (1726). He was a proponent of both poetry and science and prefaces this work with verse on Newton's genius by the young poet Richard Glover. Pemberton's acquaintance with Newton derived from his close friendship and medical collaboration with the aged scientist's doctor, Richard Mead. Although initially dismissive of Pemberton, Newton was convinced of his scientific aptitude by his research on the forces generated by moving objects upon impact. Pemberton and Newton's complementary papers on the subject were published together in the 1772 issue of the Philosophical Transactions. This collaboration, plus their work together on the Principia, gave Pemberton ample opportunity to complete A View of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy, which he read in part to a dying Newton. Babson 98. Quarto (284 x 223 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, 6 raised bands, marbled endpapers, red edges. With 12 folding engraved plates by J. Pine after J. Grison, engraved title-page vignette, head- and tailpieces, historiated initials. Covers stripped and scratched, extremities worn, ink stain to upper margins and damp stain to lower outer corners of first 40 pp., marginal pencil annotations in preliminaries, a handful of small nicks to plate edges, not crossing neatline: a good copy.

[PEMBERTON, Henry].. A View of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophy.. London S. Palmer, 1728.

Price: US$3630.00 + shipping

Description: First edition; 4to (29 x 23.5 cm); armorial bookplate to front pastedown with shelf mark C number 5, engraved title-vignette, engraved head and tail-pieces and historiated initials by John Pine after J. Grison, 12 engraved folding plates, occasional light soiling and staining, occasional annotations in pen, G4 marginal tears (repaired); fine contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, neat repairs to extremities, a handsome copy with illustrious provenance; [50], 407, [1]pp. A handsome copy of this classic introduction to Sir Isaac Newton's (1642-1727) natural philosophy, with illustrious provenance linking Newton, president of the Royal Society from 1703 to 1727, to his successor Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753), an eminent physician and collector who served as president of the society from Newton's death until 1741. Although not as academically gifted as Newton, Sloane impressed members during his time as Society Secretary, where he played a key role in revitalising the publication of the Philosophical Transactions as editor. On his death, Sloane bequeathed his library and collection to the nation, which together with the Harleian and Cotton manuscripts forms the founding collection of the British Museum. The author, Henry Pemberton (1694-1771), 'came to be on intimate terms with Richard Mead, Newton's physician. At this time an Italian, M. Poleni, produced a paper about the force generated by a moving body on impact, which Pemberton refuted as erroneous. Pemberton's treatment of the problem was passed to Newton and this, together with Newton's own refutation of Poleni's thesis, was published in the Philosophical Transactions in 1772. Intercourse between Newton and Pemberton thus became established and Pemberton was invited to superintend the editing of the third edition of the Principia mathematica, which appeared in 1726'. The work is illustrated with several folding diagrams explaining key scientific principles, including plans on Newton's celestial mechanics showing the orbits of the six known planets around the sun.
