Twain, Mark [George Hand, Yankton Dakota copy]. A Tramp Abroad. Hartford, Conn. American Publishing Company. 1880, 1880.

Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: Hardcover, 631 pages + 1 page of ads. Bound in original brown cloth, with gold decorations and lettering on the cover. Spine strip missing and front cover detached (but present). This is the first state of the first edition, with the caption “Moses” on the frontispiece illustration. It was changed to “Titian’s Moses” in later printings. Ownership signature on the inside front cover of “Geo. H. Hand. Yankton Dakota.” George H. Hand moved to Yankton in 1865 after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was Attorney General of the Dakota Territory form 1866-1869. He was the Secretary for the Dakota Territory from 1874-1883. In 1880, he served as Acting Governor for almost a year, when Gov. Howard died while in office. Hand died in 1891 and is buried in Yankton. Hand County, SD is named for him. It is wonderful to find copies of Twain’s books out in the western territories – the population of Yankton was fewer than 3,500 in 1880 – and this book was there among them, on the shelf of the Secretary for the Territory’s library. Contents in good condition, though the binding has suffered. Twain, one supposes, would have been pleased to know that a subscription agent found his way to the (then) territorial seat of the Dakota territories on his behalf. How many copies might he have sold there?

Description: First Edition, first single volume printing of the English edition, with the August ads, the earliest of the issue criteria. Illustrated with a facsimile page of manuscript from Twain’s notebooks. 8vo, publisher’s original red cloth, decorated in black and gilt on the spine and upper cover, patterned end-leaves. xxiii, [2], 564 pp. + 32 ads. A very bright, handsome and beautifully preserved copy with just a touch of mellowing to the binding, a very clean and solid copy. THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION ISSUED IN ONE VOLUME. The seemingly formless form of Twain’s most typical work is both that of storytelling and travel; for like storytelling, travel is made up of episodic events and encounters." In A TRAMP ABROAD, Twain is discovering himself as a new man in a new place in time, "just as in ROUGHING IT, in its drive West, reveals its protagonist in a series of apprenticeships until he finds himself to be none other that the author in his achieved identity of Mark Twain, so HUCKLEBERRY FINN.reveals its protagonist in a series of initiations until he finds himself to be none other than.Tom Sawyer." Of these journeys, Twain was the master, seemingly never in doubt of himself or where he was going. He had been a riverboat captain and could steer a boat up or down the river through snags or chutes, around islands and bends. And so steering his imagination and ours was somehow no difficulty for this giant of the prose form. This book is an experience in time travel and a splendid read for any of us serious about finding something special in the reading Mark Twain and great American literature.

Description: First edition, first state, with the "Moses" frontispiece. Original publisher's brown cloth, stamped in gilt and blind, brown speckled edges, pale peach endpapers. A very good or better copy with some light wear to the spine ends, spine lightly faded, corners lightly worn, spine shaken and hinges tender. An attractive example of the first state. BAL 3386. A Tramp Abroad is Twain's third travel book, which he said was "written by one loafer for a brother loafer to read" (The Routledge Encyclopedia of Mark Twain). Specifically, it tells the story of the author's adventures through the Alps with his fictional friend Harris. A combination of fiction and autobiography, the plot is based on Twain's summers in Europe with his family and especially his tours of the Black Forest and Switzerland with Joseph Twichell, who served as the inspiration for Harris.

While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent. The book is the fourth of Mark Twain's six travel books published during his lifetime and is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to the first one, The Innocents Abroad (1869). “Besides his accounts of Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, Twain includes local folklore (some of which he made up) and slips in several sketches that have little or nothing to do with Europe, including one of his most famous comic tales, ‘Jim Baker’s Bluejay Yarn” (MacDonnell, 42). The book contains 328 illustrations, which contribute to the humor in the book, four done by Twain himself, "without outside help."

Description: Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Slipcase. Very Good. First edition, second state with illustration entitled "Titian's Moses." From the library of Eugene Field. 631 pp. plus a 1-page publisher's advertisement at the rear. Rebound in full morocco and decorative endpapers with raised bands. Gilt top edge. Light rubbing to book's extremities. Custom/matching slipcase rubbed on the corners. Original brown cloth bound into the back of the book The book appears to be signed by Mark Twain on the title page and Eugene Field on a rear flyleaf. The signatures, though quite convincing, are likely forgeries made by the famed forger Eugene "Pinny" Field II (1879-1946) and Harry Dayton Sickles, working in tandem. Field's father, Eugene Field (1850-1895), was a newspaper columnist, poet, and book collector. After his death, Eugene Field's book collection passed on to his son. The younger Field developed the ability to imitate the autographs of the authors his father had collected as well as the signature of his father. As a result, Field II used his skills to create "signed" copies of his father's books, and, thus, more profitable. It is believed that Field and Sickles went on to falsify more than one hundred Abraham Lincoln documents as well as signatures of numerous other famous figures including Mark Twain, Rudyard Kipling, Frederic Remington, Theodore Roosevelt, and Robert Louis Stevenson. These forgeries have become collectible in their own right.

Description: First edition, first issue, with the plates in first states: the frontispiece with the fine underlying lines almost vertical, and the second frontispiece with the caption reading "Moses". This title, Twain's third travel book, was sold by subscription only, the publisher forbidding sale of copies to retail bookstores. Readers have generally appreciated A Tramp Abroad more for its comic value than its travel narrative. "Modern editions, however, have ignored the book's original illustrations - which are an integral part of its humour" (Rasmussen, p. 489). Twain himself contributed some drawings, promising in an interview "that need not frighten anybody, for I shall draw only a few" (LeMaster and Wilson, p.743). BAL 3386; Johnson, pp. 30-31. J. R. LeMaster & James D. Wilson, The Mark Twain Encyclopedia, 1993; R. Kent Rasmussen, Mark Twain A to Z, 1996. Octavo (210 x 139 mm).
