Irving, Washington.. The Crayon Miscellany. No. 1. A Tour on the Prairies.. Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard., 1835.

Price: US$40.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Original green muslin cloth with paper spine label. 12mo. One of 5000 copies printed. According to Blanck this is the second state with sheets bulking 11/16 of an inch thick. The paper label is of undetermined state due to chipping. The catalog at the end of the book is Blanck's state D with 12 pages of ads. An autobiographical narrative by Irving, published as the first volume of "The Crayon Miscellanies". Irving made a trip to the Indian territory in 1832 along with Henry Ellsworth, a government commissioner, and 3 other companions. They traveled westward from Fort Gibson in Oklahoma and lived among the frontiersmen and in camps and buffalo-hunting grounds of the Pawnee, Osage, and Creek tribes. Irving provides romanticized descriptions of Western life and also recounts various Indian legends and folklore. This is a good to very good copy with some spotting and wear to the covers and some wear to the spine tips. The spine label is darkened and the upper half is chipped. The text is quite foxed but in very good condition. Several page corners are chipped and worn. One section of pages is coming loose in the middle of the book. This copy has the small bookplate of noted printer, Carl P. Rollins. An attractive copy of this uncommon book in original condition.

It is of such scenes, blended with the softer traditions of Indian lore, and the dreams of the better land, this book is composed. Description: 18 x 11 cm., Second edition but first American edition, xv, [17] – 274, ca. [42, advertisements] pp., [Blanck 10140, Graff 2159, Howes I86, Langfeld p. 33, Rader 2029, Sabin 35139, Streeter 1796, Williams & Edge p. 55, WCB 56:2]; dark linen boards with printed paper label, 2 different names written on front free end paper, one dated 20th April 1835, no interior markings, some foxing but generally very good, binding intact, This well received book recounts Washington Irving's trip in 1832 with his nephew, John Treat Irving, and Indian Commissioner Henry Ellsworth between the Arkansas, the grand Canadian, and Red River. Irving began his journey from Fort Gibson and then continued on parallel of the bank of the Arkansas River, making stops and taking shelter in the forest, trees and plains along the way. While traveling the trail they were forced to travel through the alluvial soil, and numerous amounts of trees and vegetation were in sight. When walking through the forestry they were overshadowed by lofty trees and the abundant portions of pea-vines. Irving is in awe of these lands and he confirms that these prairie regions were beautiful regions and answer literally to the description of the land of promise, also known as the Far West, that he heard so much about. Their journey continued along the bank just until they reached the town of Red Fork where they crossed the Arkansas River, and there he saw the most beautiful scenery of willow and cotton-trees, rich bottoms with lofty tress and yellow foliage which game the whole landscape a sunny golden glow. Once they crossed the Cross Timbers their expedition continued westward and then they headed back to the Agency on the banks of the Verdigris River and finally resting at Fort Gibson. He records details of meetings with many individual Indians whom he generally admired. His story of saving an Osage boy from unfair treatment by a white man is classic.

Only 5,000 copies of the first printing were produced making this title fairly uncommon. This was Irving's first book written entirely in the US following his seventeen year stay in Europe. He was worried that Tour of the Prairies was too simple and not strong enough to stand on its own as a book. In January of 1835 he hit upon the idea of publishing it as the first volume in a multi-volume series he would call The Crayon Miscellany. (Brian Jay Jones: Washington Irving An American Original) In this volume he added an opening announcement (billed as an "Advertisement") with the following statement: "The 'Crayon Miscellany' will appear in the numbers, from time to time, as circumstances may permit' and will contain scenes and sketches of life in America and Europe; together with such other themes, both real and imaginary, as may present themselves to the mind of the Author." No. 2 is a first edition in very good+ condition in the publisher's original green cloth covered boards with the original paper label on the spine with a minor, narrow abrasion approximately 1/2" long. A 12mo measuring 7" tall by 4 1/4" deep with an early (1898) prior owner's name written in ink on the second free end page. 230 pages of text followed by a blank leaf and 36 pages of ads from the publisher and one final blank leaf and the free end sheet. No. 2, was published six weeks after No. 1, on May 30, 1835. Reportedly, only 5,000 copies were printed. The contents are "Irving's fond tribute to the homes of Walter Scott and Lord Byron." (Brian Jay Jones: Washington Irving An American Original.) It was well received by an adoring American public even winning fond praise from Edgar Allan Poe. No. 3 is also a first edition in very good condition with a prior owner's book plate on the front paste down and tape marks on the first free end page and with moderate foxing throughout the preliminaries, ads and end sheets as well as light soiling to the rear board. It contains 276 pages followed by eight pages of ads from the publisher. Per BAL 10144 this copy conforms to "Setting A". Like the previous two volumes, the first printing of this title was limited to 5,000 copies. This is the third and final volume in The Crayon Miscellany. A handsome and complete collection of Irving's Crayon Miscellany. (BAL 10140, 10142 & 10144; Langerfeld/Blackburn p. 33)
