Condition: Very Good
Description: Early issue of the second U.K. edition, following the first edition of 1877. Edwards, a journalist and novelist, published this travelogue shortly after returning from her first voyage to Egypt, a trip which prompted her subsequent dedication to Egyptology and archeology. J.A. Symonds noted that "It is this enthusiasm for old Egypt, running powerful and deep throughout [A Thousand Miles] as an undercurrent to its many other interests, that gives its real charm to the work" (The Academy, XI, 65); Edwards's passion and her evocative writings helped inspire much support for the protection and study of Egyptian monuments. In addition to numerous wood-engraved illustrations done after drawings by the author, the volume features a photolithographic facsimile of a hieroglyphic inscription at Abou Simbel. Light shelf wear. Beautiful book. Clean
