Description: Fifth Edition of Mill's first major work, bound in full leather especially for King's College of London. Parker, Son, And Bourn, 1862; no later printings indicated; xvi, 536pp. / xii, 550pp. Full brown pebbled leather binding, with King's College crest in gilt on front board, presentation plate on Vol. 1 front paste-down states "Presented by the Council of King's College, London to Henry Law Kempthorne as a prize for Clinical Medicine 'Todd Memorial Prize' Medical Department, Winter Session 1862-3". Both volumes in Good/Good- condition. Bindings are tight, sturdy, and fully intact; leather worn at edges of boards, split over most corners; moderate amount of rubbing to boards as well; gilt on spine and front remains bright and bold; text very good throughout both volumes; another previous owner's book plate on rear paste-downs, name at top edge of title pages. A unique copy of this classic work. A note in the July 1870 issue of the Journal of Mental Science states about the recipient of this set: "t is with great regret that we record the premature death of Dr. Henry Law Kempthorne, who though only twenty-nine years of age, had already given evidence of great attainments in that branch of the profession to which he was devoted". One gathering loose in volume two otherwise very good in original publishers dark green cloth, blind stamped borders on boards. Printed paper labels on spines.
