Minor amount of spotting, only very occ. heavier, o/w. contents fine. Recently rebound in half leather over marbled boards, with sewn headbands in fine condition. ‘The success of the ‘History of British Birds’ was immediate and complete; six editions were issued in Bewick’s lifetime’ (Mullens and Swann).

Description: Edward Walker, Newcastle. 1821. Seventh and fifth editions respectively. 330, 46, [2], 360, 43, [1] pages. Profusely illustrated with Bewick's famous wood-engravings. One engraving, of the heron, on page 49 of Vol. II. has been hand-coloured with grey water-colour paint which has slightly seeped through to the following page in an attractive way. The text is still readable. Bound in half green calf, rebacked with a modern spine and label. Large thick 8vo. Original marbled boards and edges. Occasional very light foxing otherwise a clean and very sound copy of a classic work on British Land and Sea Birds.

Description: Two volumes tall octavo measuring just over 9 inches tall, newly professionally bound in dark gray cloth with printed paper spine labels, new endpapers, both title pages laid onto new paper backing; internally nearly Fine condition, clean tight and unmarked, old marbled page edges retained; engraved frontispiece Vol. 1 [laid to new backing paper]; XL, (43)-330, 50, (2) and XXII, (19)-360, 49, (1) pages including all 4 title pages (separate titles to the Supplements). Overall Near Fine but with the new binding. NOTE: the engraved frontispiece of Bewick, engraved by T.A. Kidd, appears to be later since it states Bewick died in 1828

Sympathetically, rebound ,half leather with original marble boards.Raised bands and gilt tiles to spine. Very attractive set. Illustrated with many bucolic vignettes.The many vignettes, which serve variously as head or tail pieces, express a rootedness and a sympathy for the ordinary rural life of his time. Engravings accompanying clean text are sharp and clear. An especially handsome and attractively bound copy of an enduring ornithological classic. Fresh binding and a lovely matching two volume set.
