Condition: Good

Description: A very good copy of this superb play. The book itself inevitably has some marks along its text block edges. The hard cover is bright pink and is very clean but it is quite badly bumped on the top and bottom of the spine. Nonetheless the book holds together extremely well with no loose pages and all pages present There is an owner's stamp on the first page of the book which is otherwise clean referring to a person called E. Mawby Green of Hotel Victoria 7th Avenue at 51st Street New York 19, N.Y. which rather adds to the theatricality of the piece. There is some spotting within the book but it is very clean and a delight to read. The DJ still fits but it is badly torn in places. There is of course quite severe bumping to the DJ BUT it is not price clipped.ALL IN ALL A GEM. If you would like photos please ask. This is an unusual item. This book forms part of my own private fiction collection which, following my retirement as a solicitor, is now being disposed of. This book will be very carefully packaged and be promptly dispatched following sale. Overseas buyers should please note that shipping rates apply to packages of less than 750 g and where the package weight exceeds that weight I reserve the right to ship by economy method or to request extra carriage cost or to cancel the order. In any case it would be helpful for any buyer and for me if you calculate the postage charge by reference to the British Post office postal calculator available online for second class or (if you prefer) first class delivery rates. No charge is made by me for packaging and the actual postage cost to me will apply in any sale.

Williams, Tennessee. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. New Directions, (New York), 1947.

Price: US$750.00 + shipping

Description: First printing of Williams's most enduring play, a New Directions publication in the original dust jacket (carefully restored). The broken dreams of a Southern belle are dramatized in Williams's best known play, a hit on Broadway with Jessica Tandy and Marlon Brando in the lead roles (both then virtually unknown). After its brilliant run on stage, STREETCAR went through a groundbreaking adaptation into film, keeping many of the same people involved: Brando garnered his first Oscar nomination in the film, starring alongside Vivian Leigh. According to Geoffrey Shurlock, who was involved in the Production Code Administration that monitored the morality of motion pictures, STREETCAR changed the landscape of how films could communicate drama for adult audiences: "Tennessee Williams was something new to movies. The stage got a shock from Tennessee Williams. We got twice the shock. Now we know that a good deal of what we decide in censoring movies is not morality but taste. It began with STREETCAR" (quoted in Palmer and Bray). This first edition has since become famous in its own right for the brilliant pink jacket design by Alvin Lustig, a high point of New Directions' publications. 9'' x 6''. Original pink pictorial boards with design by Alvin Lustig. In original price-clipped pink pictorial dust jacket echoing board design. 171, [1] pages. Book with light wear to edges and bumping to extremities, a bit of toning to front endpapers. Jacket with a few small spots of restoration primarily at spine ends and edges of folds, spine gently sunned. Very good plus in very good jacket.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing. Publisher's lavender paper-covered boards designed by Alvin Lustig, lettered in black and white with an abstract illustration of three dancing figures; in the original matching dust jacket. Near fine book, with light toning to spine, light wear to head of spine, light offsetting to endpapers, previous owner's stamp to front pastedown, and a hint of waviness to top edges of ~15 pages at beginning of book; very good unclipped dust jacket, with some toning to spine and panel edges, front flap separated at fold but attached by clear tape on verso, light chipping to head of spine, a couple of small, faint spots of soiling to spine, and light edgewear. Overall, a very pleasing copy of Tennessee Williams' timeless play. A Streetcar Named Desire is the Pulitzer Prize winning play about the mental breakdown of the charming, yet troubled Southern belle Blanche DuBois, who runs away from her past by traveling to visit her sister Stella on a streetcar named "Desire." Despite its shockingly gritty language and somewhat controversial subject matter, A Streetcar Named Desire was a critical and commercial success. The play was first produced on Broadway on December 3, 1947, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. It was directed by Elia Kazan and starred Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, Jessica Tandy, and Karl Malden. Description: A beautiful copy finely bound in full crushed morocco with gilt to spine. Buff endpapers. Internally a clean, fresh copy. Description: SIGNED by Tennessee Williams (no personalization) on the front flyleaf. Sold for $15,000 at auction in Sept, 2023! A highly collectible first edition copy, one of only 5080 copies, of his Pulitzer Prize winning drama of faded, promiscuous Blanche DuBois vs her brutally sexy brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, still celebrated 75 years after its Broadway opening as one of the finest achievements in the American theatre. A highspot of theatre and cinema, Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, and solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the '40s and '50s. Of his Broadway performance in Streetcar, Brando remarked: "What I remember most about a Streetcar Named Desire was the emotional grind of acting in it six nights and two afternoons a week. Try to imagine what it was like walking on stage at 8:30 every night having to yell, scream, cry, break dishes, kick the furniture, punch the walls and experience the same intense, wrenching emotions night after night, trying each time to evoke in audiences the same emotions I felt. It was exhausting.it was emotionally draining, wearisome, mentally oppressive, and after a few weeks I wanted out of it." Original publisher's pictorial pink paper over boards (a few spots of rubbing at ends, spine sunned); original unclipped dust jacket (spined sunned, discrete expert restoration along edges). FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY WILLIAMS on front free endpaper. No other writings, markings, or pastedowns in the book except for author's signature! The author's first Pulitzer Prize winning play which Williams himself considered his best play and is one of the most important American plays of the last century (Devlin, Conversations with Tennessee Williams, p. 50). Like many of Williams' plays, some of the characters are thought to be inspired by members of Williams' own family. A Streetcar Named Desire originally premiered on Broadway on December 3rd 1949, starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy and directed by Eliza Kazan. The London production involved such theatrical luminaries as Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier. Of course, the play would be adapted in a classic film version in 1951, which would win four Academy Awards including Best Actress, and was chosen as the Library of Congress as ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.' "But Mr. Williams is entitled to his own independence. For he has not forgotten that human beings are the basic subject of art. Out of poetic imagination and ordinary compassion he has spun a poignant and luminous story." (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine dust jacket.

Williams, Tennessee; [Brando, Marlon]; [Tandy, Jessica]; [Hunter, Kim]; [Malden, Karl]. A Streetcar Named Desire (signed by opening night cast, with original Shubert Theatre program and ticket stubs). New Directions, New York, 1947.

Price: US$20000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams's first play to win the Pulitzer Prize, signed by the entire original cast, including Jessica Tandy, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden. Produced by Irene Mayer Selznick and directed by Elia Kazan, the original stage production opened in New Haven on October 30, 1947: the program for that first performance is present here, with three ticket stubs from the Shubert Theatre. The show then moved to Boston and Philadelphia before arriving on Broadway, where Tandy would win the Tony for her performance as the fragile, self-deluding Blanche DuBois: "Whoever you are - I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." Wolcott Gibbs, in a rave review for The New Yorker, regretted that "there is no way . . . to convey the effect Mr. Williams achieves in his last act of a mind desperately retreating into the beautiful, crazy world it has built for itself." A wonderful association copy, with related ephemera from the very first performance of A Streetcar Named Desire. Single volume, measuring 9 x 6 inches: 171, [1]. Original pink pictorial paper boards, original unclipped pink pictorial dust jacket designed by Alvin Lustig. Ink signatures of the original cast beside their printed names on page 5; former owner's signature to front free endpaper. Shelfwear to boards, jacket spine panel sunned, restoration and light soiling to jacket. With: original program from the October 30, 1947 premiere at New Haven's Shubert Theatre, with three opening night ticket stubs mounted to upper wrapper. Faint tidemark to rear wrapper of program. Book and program housed together in custom clamshell box.
