Printed self-wrappers [about 6.5" x 8.25"], [192] pages [last numbered page is 191], illustrated with 5 full-page drawings [with tissue guards] plus other smaller chapter decorations. A very good copy with light spine creasing else VG+ or better copy in age-toned, torn and chipped plain glassine Dust Wrapper. My copy is lacking the publishers issued slipcase. See Photos LR1/2E

One of the original 400 copies of Sternes first-person account of the exploits of a British tourist, the first edition with several illustrations, including five full plates, by the Russian artist Polia Chentoff. Laurence Sterne was an Irish-born English novelist and humourist of the eighteenth century, perhaps best known for his novel A Sentimental Journey (1768), a light-hearted comedy of moral sentiments (Britannica). The Black Sun Press was an English-language publishing house based in Paris. Founded in 1927 by American expatriates Harry and Caresse Crosby, it published the early works of influential literary figures such as Joyce, Pound, Eliot, Crane, D. H. Lawrence, and Hemingway. The books, all handset, were typographically impeccable and beautifully bound. The Black Sun Press closed in 1970, following Caresse Crosbys death. Octavo, pp. 191, edges untrimmed; a clean copy in the original printed wrappers with fold-over flaps enclosed in a glassine dust jacket, with the publishers green and gold paper-covered slipcase (glassine dust jacket browned at spine and chipped at head and tail with some loss, slipcase slightly worn, oxidised, and split at top edge). Titling is printed in green and black. No. 287 of 335 copies. With the original slipcase whose spine is detached but present and can be repaired by a paper conservator; the slipcase has edge wear, some chipping, and some cracks along some edges. The glassine wrapper has tanning and two chips to the spine.

Gilt spine with floral embellishment. Top edge gilt a shade dulled, and a tinge of derkening to the paper board extremities. Really, though, a gorgeous example of this handsome publication; #74 of 335 numbered copies executed on Arches paper.

Beautifully bound in an unusual Zaehnsdorf full tan morocco binding consisting of a stunning linear starburst pattern eminating out from one corner on front and back covers, and with a central rectangular image of mult-colored inlaid leathers (green, red-brown, ochre and light blue) of a tree on a hillside with a road or path extending uphill. With delicate illustrations by Polia Chentoff throughout, printed in red and green. Near fine with unobtrusive oil marks on cover.
