Graham Greene. A SENSE OF REALITY (1/1). The Bodley Head, London, 1963.

Price: US$12.72 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: First impression of the true first edition. ***Please note this is a reading copy only as there is staining which affects the periphery of the boards and some of the interior pages. ***A good only copy in forest-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are quite clean but there is a thin strip of staining along the fore-edge of the front board. No tears or creases to the cloth - just slight creasing to the top corners. Page block edges browned. Internally the book is also good with a neat contemporary name and date to the front free endpaper. There is some light creasing to the top corners of some of the pages, and as mentioned, the endpapers are streaked with what looks like coffee staining, and this also affects some of the margins of the interior pages (please see scans). No reading lean. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 15s net. The dustwrapper is complete with no chips, tears or loss. There is just some light rubbing and creasing at the edges, mainly at the top corner tips of the foldovers. No creases or tears. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***204mm x 138mm. 140 pages. ***Contents: Under the Garden, A Visit to Morin, Dream of a Strange Land, A Discovery in the Woods. ***'"A Sense of Reality" is the first collection of tales by Mr Greene since the publication of "Twenty-one Stories" in 1954. That was a collection made over a period of more than twenty years and it was described by the author as a by-product of his activities as a novelist. The four stories in this new book (including the short novel, "Under the Garden") were written during the last two years and have been the novelist's main occupation. In them Mr Greene has for the first time allowed himself the liberty of fantasy, myth, legend, dream. None of them has been published before.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper, but with the aforementioned staining, so a good reading copy of the true first edition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
