Condition: Very Good

Description: 1966. First trade edition (a limited edition of 100 copies was also issued) 164pp. Gary Snyder (born 1930) is an American poet, essayist, lecturer, and environmental activist. His early poetry has been associated with the Beat Generation and the San Francisco Renaissance and he has been described as the "poet laureate of Deep Ecology". He is also a winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the American Book Award. 'A Range of Poems' is the first comprehensive collection of Snyder's poetry. It brings together his three early books - Riprap, Cold Mountain, and Myths and Texts - and contains the first publication of 'The Back Country' and 'Miyazawa Kenji'. The book is bound in rhe original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and top corners. The contents are tight and clean with slight browning to the top and fore margins of the pages. There is a little bubbling to the fore edge of the fixed endpapers but no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some light soiling and the spine is browned with a small water splash. About 1/4" is missing from the bottom of the spine, top front edge and part of the rear top edge. Up to about 1" is missing from around the top of the spine. There are tears of about 1" on the top front and back corners that have been repaired on the reverse with tape.

SNYDER, Gary. A RANGE OF POEMS: Collected Poems.. London: Fulcrum Press., 1966.

Price: US$83.74 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing. Originial brown cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the 'brown-paper' dustwrapper, lettered in black to spine and front panel. Erratum slip tipped in to the rear, as called for. A very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean throughout. A few faint spots to the upper edge of the page block and a couple of tiny ink marks to the lower edge. In the clean, well preserved wrapper, a touch rubbed to spine folds and tips, the tips with a few nicks and creases. Altogether, a very presentable copy. 'A Range of Poems', the first comprehensive collection of Gary Snyder's poetry, contained all the poems he wished to preserve in book form at the time. It includes his three early books 'Riprap', 'Cold Mountain', and 'Myths and Texts', along with the first appearance of 'The Back Country' and 'Miyawaza Kenji'. It was during this period that Snyder was most closely associated with Kenneth Rexroth, Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac, the latter basing the character of Japhy Ryder in 'The Dharma Bums' on the poet. Snyder won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1975, the American Book Award in 1984, and the Bollingen Prize for Poetry in 1997. "I reread Gary Snyder's poems with wonder at their daring and with admiration for their solidity. There can be few poets alive who know as much about verse-rhythms as he does, and even fewer who can with such firmness and delicacy preserve through them experience in the process of formation." (Thom Gunn). Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
