The poetry in this collection was written over the course of the prolific and acclaimed author's 67 year writing career, starting in 1925. The writings originally appeared in a wide range of British cultural and political periodicals, including "The Spectator", "The New Statesman", "The Sunday Times" and "Punch". Henry Graham Greene OM CH (2 October 1904 – 3 April 1991) , better known by Graham Greene, was an English novelist regarded by many as one of the leading English novelists of the 20th century. Combining literary acclaim with widespread popularity, Greene acquired a reputation early in his lifetime as a major writer, both of serious Catholic novels, and of thrillers (or "entertainments" as he termed them). He was shortlisted, in 1966 and 1967, for the Nobel Prize for Literature. Through 67 years of writings, which included over 25 novels, he explored the ambivalent moral and political issues of the modern world, often through a Catholic perspective. Description: First edition, first printing. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION. The print run for this handsome volume was 330 copies; however, a few copies only were set aside and stamped by the publisher "presentation copy" to the limitation leaf. These special, designated copies demonstrate strong collector appeal due to their obvious paucity in the overall run, but also because they serve to unite a more attractively personal bond between the author and the recipient of the "presentation." However, there can surely be no more valuable instance here than that between Greene and a famous, fellow author: and here we have a very nice example. Stamped "presentation copy", with Graham Greene's neat, spidery signature in blue ink below, the book is inscribed by the publisher to the blank, front endpaper as follows "For John Fowles from Ralph Sylvester and Stathis Orphanos"; to the front pastedown is the personal bookplate of John Fowles. A splendid, unique copy. The English post-war novelist John Fowles became a writer of international renown with such classics as "The Collector" (1963), "The Magus" (1965) and, most famously, "The French Lieutenant's Woman" (1969), all of which continue to remain eminently collectable (and expensive) as first editions. A wonderful ASSOCIATION COPY between the two, and a nice thought to imagine that this was Fowles' own particular copy. Thankfully, he obviously looked after the book extremely well. It is preserved in Very Fine condition, retaining the original slipcase, as issued. The slipcase is a little age-browned to its extremities. Printed on Arches paper, the book was issued in embossed blue boards with a blind-stamped motif and a white label to spine. Comprising of Greene's poems from across a lifetime, including three which appeared originally in his first book, "Babbling April", in 1925.
