Front cover with two heavy vertical creases (though cover lays flat) which are also on first two leaves, light wear to cover edges and spine folds, small brown irregular shaped stain on top edge of pages, and two lines of ink writing at top of half-title page by previous owner; text block is reasonably tight. The Canadian trade edition is said to precede the US edition by Morrow; this proof has Canadian cover and title page, but has the US copyright page.

Description: 1st printing of the 1st Canadian hardcover edition SIGNED by Irving on the title page with a blue ballpoint pen and a stroke through his printed name. Light blue paper boards with a darker blue cloth binding, silver titles and blue/gray end papers. Published simultaneously with the American edition and printed in the U.S., the Canadian edition would have been a fraction of the U.S. edition. The Canadian maintains the same jacket design. The narrator of the novel is an American expatriate living in Toronto, which is also Irving's adopted home. A tight copy with sharp corners. Ghost of a pencil erasure at the top edge of the half-title page, and the author's autograph made an impression on the following page. Light tanning to the page edges.The jacket is bright, crisp and price intact. No tears or creases. Light tanning of the white flaps. Also available from this bookseller is an American 1st printing of The Cider House Rules (NY: Morrow, 1985) with a bookplate signed by Irving laid in and the Canadian and true first edition of Trying to Save Piggy Sneed (Toronto: Knopf Canada, 1993) signed by the author.
