Walter Lord | [Emily Rugg]. A Night to Remember. Henry Holt and Company, New York, 1955.

Price: US$1500.00 + shipping

Description: Early Printing. December, 1955. Octavo (8vo). 209pp. Bound in publisher's cloth boards. The copy of Titanic survivor Emily Rugg, with her ownership signature and what appears to be an original verse about her experience: 'It was my fortune to survive, I'm very glad to be alive.' Ms. Rugg was 22 when she left her native Guernsey and boarded the Titanic at Southampton for Wilmington, Delaware. Sleeping, she was violently awoken when the Titanic struck the iceberg. Looking through her cabin window she saw the mass of ice and headed to the top deck where lifeboats were being readied. She quickly went back below decks to wake her cabin mates, Lillian Bentham and Lillian Renouf, before returning top deck and boarding lifeboat 12, which she described as the 'third from last.' Later, she would describe the spectacle of the ship sinking into the void, with lights shining bright, as the grandest sight she had ever witnessed. [Encyclopedia Titanica]. Ms. Rugg spent the rest of her life in Wilmington where she was often interviewed or was the subject of articles pertaining to the Titanic. Though she never married, she was a member of the choir at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Wilmington. One can imagine her finishing Walter Lord's bestseller in 1955, taking a moment to reflect, and adding the little bit of verse, melancholy and exalted, of her own experience. A remarkable association copy. VERY GOOD in Very Good dust jacket protected in a removable archival cover. The book itself with a hint of shelf rubbing along the edges and corners, preliminaries very lightly toned, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain bright and distinct. The dust jacket shows some light chipping of the topmost of the spine and front panel, marginal shelf rubbing along the edges and corners, otherwise is not price-clipped remaining bright and distinct. As pictured.

And, from looking online at other references to Walter Lord and Robert Forrest, an item on Worthpoint (I'm attaching a screen shot) includes this: "[Lord and Forrest] were Titanic enthusiasts and collectors, who contributed to various publications concerning the ill-fated ship." Walter Lord's papers relating to the Titanic in the Lord-MacQuitty Collection at the Royal Museums Greenwich: Walter Lord bequeathed his collection to the National Maritime Museum in 2002, encouraged by his close friend William Macquitty, the producer of 'A Night to Remember'. The collection also includes items previously owned by William Macquitty. William MacQuitty (15 May 1905 – 5 February 2004) was born in Belfast. He was six when he watched the launch of the TITANIC on 30 May 1911, and saw her set sail on her fateful maiden voyage a year later. During the Second World War he worked in film production for the Ministry of Information but it was only in the 1950s that his interest in the TITANIC was rekindled. His wife had been reading Lord’s 'A Night to Remember' and he realised that this was the film he had been waiting for. He took an option on the film rights, met Walter Lord, and together they developed a screenplay based on the book. MacQuitty then produced the film, also called 'A Night to Remember' (directed by Roy Ward Baker) and following its success won a contract for the Independent Television Authority’s franchise for Ulster.
