Condition: Near Fine

Description: John Updike's novel concerns a month of seventh days, a month of enforced rest and recreation as experienced by the Reverend Tom Marshfield, sent west from his Midwestern church in disgrace. In his wonderfully overwrought style the errant cleric spills day by day his confession his boyhood in a parsonage, his marriage to the daughter of his ethics professor, his seduction of his organist, his antipathetic conversations with his senile father and his bisexual curate, his golf scores, his poker hands, his biblical exegeses, his faith. Book is very,VERY funny. Book in near fine condition with slight bumping at spine ends and very slight chipping at spine bottom. Unclipped ($6.95) jacket is very good with wear at spine ends and corners. Book has a page on verso of half title page of Chinese characters and a pencil notation on ffep " Taiwan piracy". John Updike. A Month of Sundays (Hardcover). Knopf Publishing Group, 1975.

Price: US$36.31 + shipping

Condition: New

Description: Hardcover. In this antic riff on Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter," the Reverend Tom Marshfield, a latter-day Arthur Dimmesdale, is sent west from his Midwestern parish in sexual disgrace. At a desert retreat dedicated to rest, recreation, and spiritual renewal, this fortyish serial fornicator is required to keep a journal whose thirty-one weekly entries constitute the book you now hold in your hand. In his wonderfully overwrought style he lays bare his soul and his past—his marriage to the daughter of his ethics professor, his affair with his organist, his antipathetic conversations with his senile father and his bisexual curate, his golf scores, his poker hands, his Biblical exegeses, and his smoldering desire for the directress of the retreat, the impregnable Ms. Prynne. A testament for our times. A Month Of Sundays is John Updike's seventh novel that concerns a month of seventh days, a month of enforced rest and relaxation .This book has achieved a sureness of touch, and a supplement of style. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Description: First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, Cheers, John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association.
