The recipient, who was the son of the painter Sir Ernest Albert Waterlow, exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 1937 and 1938. He previously saw action at the Battle of Loos and was retired from frontline duty after being severely injured during the first day of fighting. In these memorable illustrations, Rackham "developed his gift for drawing witches, gnomes, fairies, and anthropomorphized trees and brought them to a pitch of vivid characterization, sometimes with an unsettling frisson of horror" (ODNB). Latimore & Haskell, p. 32; Riall, p.87. The Tonbridgian, vol. 23, no. 7, July 1918, p. 394. Quarto (241 x 172 mm). RACKHAM, Arthur (illus.); SHAKESPEARE, William.. A Midsummer-Night's Dream.. London: William Heinemann; Doubleday, Page & Co. New York, 1908, 1908.

Price: US$1924.14 + shipping

Description: First Rackham edition, the jacket visually enhanced with a Rackham illustration to appeal to the illustrated gift book market. During this period, the book trade viewed jackets as functional pieces of ephemera to be discarded at the point of purchase. The statement on this jacket's spine reasserts its original utilitarian rather than aesthetic main purpose: "Cash price in Great Britain and Ireland 15/- net". In these memorable illustrations, Rackham "developed his gift for drawing witches, gnomes, fairies, and anthropomorphized trees and brought them to a pitch of vivid characterization, sometimes with an unsettling frisson of horror" (ODNB). Latimore & Haskell, p. 32; Riall, p. 87. Quarto. Original tan cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, vignette in gilt on front cover, top edge light blue. With dust jacket. Colour frontispiece and 39 colour plates tipped to tan paper, as issued, with captioned tissue guards, and further line drawings in the text, all by Rackham. Title page printed in black and pale brown with vignette. Extremities lightly bumped, book block a little shaken, small splash marks on top edge, occasional browning to contents, plates bright; jacket with light spine toning and splash marks at lower edges, shallow loss to spine ends, a couple of closed tears at folds, remaining well-preserved overall, printed price to spine struck through in pencil: a very good copy in like jacket.
