Price: US$40.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Nice condition copy of "A Masque of Reason" by ROBERT FROST with original dust jacket. 1945 1st edition, 1st printing (stated); Henry Holt and Company; New York. The dust jacket is un-clipped with the original $2.00 price intact on the front flap, and comes with a clear protective sleeve (not shown). From the dust jacket: "This new poem by Robert Frost.is a literary event of major importance. In a Masque of Reason, Frost.is witty and charitable, mocking and affectionate, as many-faceted and sharp-edged as a diamond. He is at the same time detached and benevolent, ironic and warm-hearted - an attitude toward mankind that springs from his inexhaustible faith in the mind and spirit of the individual. Mr. Frost's flexible blank verse, heightened but never far from natural speech, sparkles with audacity and wit. The freshness and vitality of this play are communicated by the most casual reading. With each rereading the total import deepens and widens, for this extraordinary poem constitutes a still further range of the power, the imagination, and the technique of Robert Frost." Condition: There is a 1" thick strip along the left edge of the front cover where the navy blue cloth color has faded a bit. Clean back cover and spine. Sharp cover corners. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean and appear unread with no issues found. Overall the book is in Very Good+ condition. Price: US$1650.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, ASSOCIATION COPY WARMLY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST TO A FRIEND AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY, SIGNED AND DATED 1945 in the year of publication. 8vo, publisher’s original navy blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. [6], 23, [1 blank] pp. A fine copy, the book wonderfully preserved, the navy cloth near pristine, the jacket with only very slight age mellowing and a small chip at tip of the spine. FIRST EDITION AND A FINE AND PLEASING SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Proctor lasted well beyond his years in Cambridge. It was President Conant who first cited Frost as "The Poet of New England" when Frost was given an honorary degree of Litt.D. in 1937. In 1938 Frost resigned from Amherst and was elected to Harvard's Board of Overseers and that year also saw him placed in the English department at the university. Conant reappointed Frost for the years 1939 through 1942. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for years following. The inscription on this 1945 publication reads, "To Virginia Proctor / For all her kindness and friendship / Robert Frost / Bread Loaf (VT.) 1945" FIRST EDITION. Published on the occasion of Frost 70th birthday this poem in the form of a verse play was such an extreme departure from Frost’s earlier forms and style that it startled many of his devoted readers. They may have found a challenge in his change of thought and theme, but no loss in the intensity of his feeling or the mastery of his technique.

Description: First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Frost on front free endpaper, with a holograph of his poem, "Bravado": "Bravado / Have I not walked without an upward look / Of caution under stars that very well / Might not have missed me when they shot and fell? / It was a risk I had to take - and took. / Robert Frost / For Stanley Brightwell / 1946." Publisher's navy boards, with spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with a drawing of a desert and fire-ball attributed to "Palacias," lettered in black, with portrait of Frost to rear panel. Near fine book, with light rubbing to spine ends and corners of boards, small bookseller's label affixed to front free endpaper, and a hint of soiling to top right of half-title page; in a near fine dust jacket, unclipped, with light toning to spine, light wear to spine ends, bright and clean panels, and lightly nicked corners. Overall, a beautiful copy, with a one-of-a-kind inscription. Crane A27.1. A Masque of Reason is a short, comedic play that marks a thematic departure from Frost's previous works. An examination of the relationship between God and man written in blank verse, the text purports to be the 43rd chapter of the Book of Job from the Bible, which only has 42 chapters. In 1947, Frost published the sequel to this play, A Masque of Mercy, which touches on the same theme. Notably, A Masque of Reason was published on the occasion of Frost's 70th birthday, with the subsequent trade edition published on his actual date of birth, March 26th. "Bravado" is the third poem in Frost's "Five Nocturnes," which was first published in his 1947 collection of poetry, Steeple Bush. Notably, this inscribed holograph of "Bravado" is dated 1946 - a year prior to its first published appearance. The five short poems contained in "Five Nocturnes" are: "I. The Night Light," "II. Were I in Trouble," "III. Bravado," "IV. On Making Certain Anything Has Happened," and "V. In the Long Night." In "Five Nocturnes," the speaker's nighttime ruminations are reminiscent of those found in other classic Frost poems like "Acquainted with the Night" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening."
