STEVENSON, Robert Louis. [ROYCROFT] A Lodging for the Night: Being a tale concerning one of life's lesser hardships-commonly called trouble. Roycrofters, East Aurora, NY, 1902.

Price: US$1000.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Octavo, 44pp., illustrated. A fine, fresh, lovely copy in the publisher's ¾ light brown morocco and marbled boards, with marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, silk ribbon, gilt spine, and raised bands. In a contemporary plain straight-grained yellow cloth dust jacket and green cloth slipcase. It's unclear whether these were executed by Roycroft or were done slightly later by someone else. But in any event, they have very nicely preserved the book. This is number 16 of 100 limited copies printed on Japan Vellum and "illumined" [that-is, hand-illuminated] by one of the workers at the Roycroft Shop. In this case, the artist was Elsie Whitney, who has signed her name on the limitation page, where of course Elbert Hubbard signed his name, as well. A positively charming Roycroft volume, much more refined than their more pedestrian publications. An uncommon book, genuinely scarce in this condition.
