Original leaf inserted from the Book of Job from the first edition of the King James Bible./ Letterpress printed in red and black./ Lowes' work is reprinted from his Essays in appreciation./ "Three hundred copies of this book have been printed for the Book Club of California by the Grabhorn Press"--Colophon./This passage is from the Book of Job with one of the great passages on the purpose of suffering (Job 23:10) "But he knoweth the way I take; when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as pure gold." 4 ornamental initial beautifully hand-illuminated in red, blue, and gold done by Valenti Angelo (though not noted in the bibliographic information). Printed in hand-set Franciscan Type. Original leaf inserted following p. xvi. The extended context of the passage has Eliphaz exhortation to Job to repentance. Original announcement is laid in. Upon close examination we see the insertion of words in roman type versus the black letter which is a major part of the text. Often this was done to reduce font size. Bookplate: Martin Mitau (1900-1973) and Marjorie (nee Fleishhacker) Mitau (1906-1983) were both San Franciscans. Their collection was strong in fine printing. Their bookplate shows a European outdoor bookmarket with collectors in search of the next work for their collection. Bound in 1/4 beige cloth over paper covered boards. 4a few small spots of foxing to covers. A very good copy.

Description: Slim folio, cloth-backed patterned boards (somewhat soiled; paper spine label partially lacking). San Francisco: The Book Club of California, 1937. Limited Edition -- one of 300 copies. Very good. Laid in is a leaf from the Old Testament, the end of Chapter XXII & the beginning of Chapter XXIII, with one initial letter. The leaf is lightly stained in the margins; the book is very good, with rust marks from a paper clip on two blank pages, and very lightly on the title page. The boards are lightly rubbed on the front, with stains on the back cover and bumped corners. One of 300 copies printed at the Grabhorn Press. Gsabhorn Bibliography 275.
