Rémy made collections of botanical and geological specimens, shells, and published works on his journeys and observations, including an early record of a visit to the island of Moloka, and this report on the Mormon people of Utah published in French in 1860. "The truth, so often perverted, will be vindicated in this work. Of those who have written on the Mormons, by far the greater number have derived their information from sources little to be relied on. The historians and travellers who have been their guides, have either never inspected the facts on the spot, or have looked at them from the point of view of their own foregone opinions, and too often of their passions. I have had the advantage of seeing with my own eyes, and my readers, I hope, will be sensible of it. Free, moreover, as far as I am aware, from all prejudice, I am able to affirm that I have contemplated the moral side of the picture with the same eye and the same impartialiltly as I have the physical side. The good and the bad have been exhibited; but if I correct erroneous opinions, I am far from offering myself as an apologist. It is the consciousness of this sincerity and impartiality which has inspired me with some confidence, and imparted to me the desire of presenting myself before the public. With serious and earnest men, truth is always the first of considerations, and it is for such I write." - from the preface.

The Frenchmen were fascinated by the Mormons, and much of this book is devoted to the new American religion" (Wagner-Camp 364:2). "In addition to producing one of the first travel narratives about the Mormons originally published in a non-English language, Remy and his companion were also somewhat unusual in approaching Utah from the West, traveling from San Francisco to Salt Lake City. They arrived on 25 September 1855 and stayed a full month, observing, as they put it, 'a religion at the very moment of its birth.' Their book was first published in France in 1860, then was translated into English and published the next year as 'A Journey to Great-Salt-Lake City' (London: W. Jeffs, 1861)" (Smith, p. 160). Remy, Jules and Julius Brenchley. A Journey to Great-Salt-Lake City by Jules Remy and Julius Brenchley… with a Sketch of the History, Religion, and Customs of the Mormons, and an Introduction on the Religious Movements in the United States. W. Jeffs, London, 1861.

Price: US$1650.00 + shipping

Description: 2 volumes, large 8vo, original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, illustrated with 10 steel engravings, [2], cxxxi, 508; vii, 605 pp. Spines faded, spine ends frayed, edges and corners rubbed, a few spots of soiling to covers, a couple of tears on the top of spines, joints just a bit tender, normal aging, Salt Lake Temple donation bookplate on front endpapers; otherwise very good. This is an important first hand account of a journey across America from west to east. Wagner-Camp indicates that “Remy and his companion Julius Brenchley traveled from San Francisco to Salt Lake City in the summer of 1855… The Frenchman were fascinated by the Mormons, and much of this book is devoted to the new American religion.” However, unlike contemporary American accounts of the Mormons, Remy (1826-1893), and fellow European explorer Richard Burton, were far more objective in their commentary.
