Shelf wear to boards with fading along front and rear boards. Spine chipped and peeling along top and bottom edges. 1 inch closed tears to covering of spine near top and bottom running horizontally. Rear board loosely attached to spine at bottom edge. Foxing to majority of pages, pages still readable. Binding tight. Fair Condition. Latin text on title page reads as follows: "Venient annis secula seris, Quibus Oceanus vincula rerum Laxet, et ingens pateat tellus, Tiphysque novus detegat orbes, Nec sit terris ultima Thule. - Seneca. Description: 3 volumes. Full (brown) leather bindings. The spines have raised cords and once had black title labels. The title labels are missing on volume 1 and part of volume 2. All the boards are attached, but the hinges are weak. Marbled endpapers. Small ownership name of WIlliam L. Jenkins on the first blank page. Volume 1 is 399 pages. Volume 2 is 367 pages. Volume 3 is 419 pages (+1 unnumbered page). First edition of Irving's biography of Columbus. Measures 5.75 x 8.75 inches. Large folding map at the front of the first volume has some tears at the creases and an early repair. First edition. This is the first book Irving published in his own name, after the success of his Knickerbocker stories. Description: Hardcover. 3 volumes. Bound in full brown leather. Spine labels in maroon and black with gold lettering and subtle decorations. Bindings good and tight. Text blocks solid, as well. Some foxing, as you would expect. Front endpaper of first volume is creased. Folding map is present in the first volume and is in very good shape, with only a small tear where it's tipped in (but none at the folds). A name has been clipped from the rear endpaper of volume 1, but not the words "Salem F. Academy, N.C." 399 pages. Volume 2 has 367 pages. Volume 3 has 420 pages. The Salem Academy note may be the Salem Female Academy in Winston-Salem. Irving's biography of Columbus was the first book Irving published under his own name. It was popular and successful. This is the first american edition. Priority and international shipping will require extra shipping because this is a 3 volume set. Books measure 5.5 x 9 inches.

Two manuscript letters in French pasted in, an auction dealers notes on this copy intended for printing in a catalog This thee volume American edition is much rarer than the four volume first British edition also dated 1828. Heraldic bookplate (lion rampant holding cross botonnee above quartered shield with four crosses botonnee above sash with single word “Chase” attached to rebound fixed endpaper of each volume. Rebinding is neat and tight. Exact companion to Irving's "Voyages and Discoveries of the Cmpanions of Columbus" also offered here #959.
