Description: contemporary red cloth, title in gilt on flat spine, paper dust jacket with title in black ink on upper board and spine, upper and lower boards of the dust jackets with coloured illustrations. , Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill (1874 ? 1965) was a British politician, army officer, and writer. He was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, when he led Britain to victory in the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. Churchill represented five constituencies during his career as a Member of Parliament (MP). Ideologically an economic liberal and imperialist, for most of his career he was a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955, but from 1904 to 1924 was instead a member of the Liberal Party. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, Churchill remains popular in the UK and Western world, where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role in defending liberal democracy from the spread of fascism. Also praised as a social reformer and writer, among his many awards was the Nobel Prize in Literature. Conversely, his imperialist views and comments on race, as well as his sanctioning of human rights abuses in the suppression of anti-imperialist movements seeking independence from the British Empire, have generated considerable controversy., Size : 8vo., , It is a four-volume history of Britain and its former colonies and possessions throughout the world, written by Winston Churchill, covering the period from Caesar's invasions of Britain (55 BC) to the end of the Second Boer War (1902). CHURCHILL, Winston S.. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.. London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1956-58, 1956.

Price: US$483.10 + shipping

Description: First editions, first impressions. Churchill's great history met with acclaim and proved an international best-seller, further vindicating his receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. A masterpiece of readable, popular history, it remains in print today. Churchill began his history during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s but did not complete it until the latter half of the 1950s, after his final retirement as prime minister. He presented a single intertwined narrative of the histories of Britain, the United States, and the empire's dominions. It was history as manifesto, setting out a vision of the English-speaking nations as bound by a common history and purpose; through stressing their shared heritage and destiny, Churchill, by birth half English and half American, believed he could cement the bonds between them. He consequently gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, especially the War of Independence and the Civil War. Cohen A267.1(I)-(IV).a. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges red. With dust jackets. Illustrated with maps and genealogical tables. Contemporary gift inscription "from G.V.A. 10th May 1956" to front free endpaper of vol. I. Spotting to book edges; jackets price-clipped (save vol. IV with overprice sticker), tape repair to closed tears on spine panel of vol. I, light wear at extremities: a very good set in good jackets.

Price: US$579.72 + shipping

Description: A set of first edition, first printings published by Cassell between 1956-1958. London: Cassell and Company, 1956-8. [English History]. Octavo (25 x 17 x 15cm), pp.[2]; xxii; 416; pp.[2]; xii; 344; [2]; pp.[2]; xii; 332; [6]; pp.[2]; xii; 322. With occasional in-text maps and plans. In publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spines, top edges red, pictorial dust-jackets priced at 30s. Some foxing, jackets are in lovely clean condition - a very good set. Volume 1 has an inscription. Some light chipping to the spine tips and corners. This is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully', until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest this history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published.

CHURCHILL, Winston S.. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.. London: The Educational Book Company Ltd, 1956-58, 1956.

Price: US$708.54 + shipping

Description: The Chartwell Edition, the first fully illustrated edition of Churchill's best-selling history of Britain, its empire, and the United States; the second edition overall. It was published near-simultaneously with the Cassell first edition, but in a larger format, on superior paper, handsomely bound, and with an extensive suite of half-tone plates in addition to the maps and plans of the Cassell edition. Churchill began his history during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s but did not complete it until the latter 1950s, after his final retirement as prime minister. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship", the shared heritage and destiny of Britain and the United States. Consequently, he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, especially the War of Independence and the Civil War. The work received immediate international acclaim, further vindicating Churchill's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. A masterpiece of readable, popular history, it remains in print today. Cohen A267.2. 4 volumes, large octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt-panelled spines with tall red labels, front covers lettered and ruled in gilt, top edges blue. Prolifically illustrated with plates, diagrams, and tables. Churchill Winston. A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES. London Cassell and Co 1956, 57, 58, 1956.

Price: US$764.50 + shipping

Description: 4 volumes. First edition of each volume. With numerous maps throughout. 8vo, publisher's original crimson cloth lettered in gilt on the spines, in bright, original pictorial dustjackets. xxi, 395; xi, 325; xi, 312; xi, 304. Index in each volume. A very clean and very bright set, the books handsome and fine but for the most trivial evidence of age, the jackets bright and fresh occasionally with some very minor evidence of age or use. AN IMPORTANT SET OF FIRST EDITIONS. By the beginning of World War II, Churchill had already penned half a million words of this manuscript. Lying dormant through almost six years of war followed by an even longer period in which Churchill wrote his war memoirs, this work finally was brought to fruition in 1956. The first two volumes of this set were published in April and November 1956 respectively, the third in October 1957, and the last in March 1958. Whereas the first two volumes sold briskly, the final two were less successful and were not reprinted for years. Sir Winston Churchill ranks among the greatest men of history. He was born in 1874, a descendent of the great Duke of Marlborough. After an education at Harrow and Sandhurst he entered the army in 1895 and embarked on one of the most varied and distinguished careers of the century. He acted as a correspondent for the Morning Post during the Boer War and his dramatic escape from prison in Pretoria brought him to public attention. He embarked on his political career in 1900 by entering Parliament. While there he held many major offices of state: Home Secretary, Secretary of State for War, First Lord of the Admiralty in which he oversaw naval operations for the First World War, Colonial Secretary, Chancellor of the Exchequer and eventually in 1940, Prime Minister. The latter office he would hold throughout World War Two and again from 1951 to 1955. He was a prolific writer, always submerged in simultaneous multi-facted projects. He finished both A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES and his other great multi-volume work THE SECOND WORLD WAR during the same period as he was perfecting his style of painting and writing PAINTING AS A PASTIME. His death in 1965 sent the whole world into mourning and his funeral was on of the most moving public events of the century.

The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship", the shared heritage and destiny of Britain and the United States. Consequently, he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, especially the War of Independence and the Civil War. Cohen A267.1(I)-(IV).a. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges red. With dust jackets. Illustrated with maps and genealogical tables. Jackets a little soiled and toned with a few short closed tears at extremities, prices intact: fine copies in very good jackets.

Churchill Winston. A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES. London Cassell and Co 1956, 57, 58, 1956.

Price: US$874.50 + shipping

Description: 4 volumes. First edition of each volume. With numerous maps throughout. 8vo, publisher's original crimson cloth lettered in gilt on the spines, in bright, original pictorial dustjackets. xxi, 395; xi, 325; xi, 312; xi, 304. Index in each volume. A very clean and very bright set, the books handsome and fine but for the most trivial evidence of age, the jackets bright and fresh occasionally with some very minor rubbing along the edges and folds.

CHURCHILL, Winston S.. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.. London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1956-58, 1956.

Price: US$966.20 + shipping

Short closed tear to front fold of vol. I, a hint of rubbing, sunning, and soiling to unclipped jackets but still unusually fresh. A fine set in near-fine jackets.

Price: US$1250.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This gorgeously printed menu served as a program for the publishing party celebrating A HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING PEOPLES - Volume One on St. George's Day [April 23] 1956. Churchill himself was present and spoke, as well as ceremonially laying the foundation stone for the new headquarters of his publisher Cassell at 7 Red Lion Square. Both Desmond and Newman Flower, Churchill's longtime Cassell publishers and editors, also spoke, and Yorkshire Pudding was served, with "Crinoline Lady and Peaches" for dessert. The wines for each course were superb, and Hine cognac, Churchill's favorite, was poured; a 1914 vintage. The menu is in virtually mint condition, a single folded sheet of lush, beveled paper. There are a couple of food stains on the blank verso. If they could only talk, or at least be reconstituted.

CHURCHILL, Winston S.. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.. London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1956-58, 1956.

Price: US$1610.33 + shipping

Description: Advance proof copies of Churchill's great history of Britain, the British Empire, and the United States, retaining the scarce proof jackets - volume one was not issued in one - and with presentation slips/letters from the publisher in the latter three volumes. This set is from the collection of Churchill's bibliographer Ronald Cohen. The proof copies are similar to the eventual published versions. The major differences are that none are indexed, the table of contents of volumes one and four do not give page numbers, the preface in volume one is blank, and some changes are made to the acknowledgements. The publication dates and prices are correctly given on the front wrappers. The jackets are identical to the published versions. In his bibliography, Cohen mentions that David Ascoli, one of the directors of Cassell, distributed proof copies of volume three in May 1957 and volume IV in January 1958. Here, volumes two to four have presentation slips/letters from Ascoli (volume two: slip with publication details and "with the compliments of David Ascoli"; volume three: signed letter dated May 1957 ; volume four: signed letter dated 1 January 1958). Ascoli's letter in the fourth volume concludes "let the pigmies [sic] fire their critical darts. This work will endure, long after their shrill little squeaks have died away, a fitting monument to one of the wisest, the most chivalrous and the most honoured sons of all the English-Speaking Peoples". Provenance: Ronald Cohen, with his ownership inscription in pencil on the front free endpapers. Cohen's Bibliography of the Writings of Sir Winston Churchill, published in three volumes in 2006, is the authoritative source for collectors, librarians, and dealers. Cohen A267.1(I)-(IV).a. 4 volumes, octavo. Proof copies in the original printed card wrappers, vols. II, III, and IV in original dust jackets. Vol. I spine a little sunned with minor crease; jackets with light creasing and nicking at extremities (naturally, as they are larger than the book blocks), slight ring stain to front panel of vol. II; fine copies in near-fine jackets.

CHURCHILL, Winston.. A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. Vol. I The Birth of Britain; Vol. II The New World; Vol. II The Age of Revolution; Vol. IV The Great Democracies.. London London Cassell and Compnay Ltd, 1956.

Price: US$1815.00 + shipping

Description: First editions; 4 volumes, staggered publication from 1956-58, 8vo (246 x 165 mm each); illustrated with maps and charts; modern half red morocco gilt, top edges gilt, housed in a leather-entry slip-case, a fine and very handsome set. A rousing account of the early history of Britain, the work describes the great men and women of the past and their impact on the development of the legal and political institutions of the English. Indeed, Churchill celebrates the creation of the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system and the kings, queens, and leading nobles who helped create English democracy. Following Marlborough's victory at Blenheim in 1704 and ending with Wellington's defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, Churchill recounts Britain's rise to world leadership over the course of the eighteenth century. This last volume spans the period between 1815 and 1901. It draws to a close when the British Empire is at its peak - with a staggering one-fifth of the human race presided over by the then, longest reigning monarch in British history, Queen Victoria. As with the other volumes it is a history not only of the English-speaking peoples, but also of the world that they inhabit. Churchill traces the footsteps of these inhabitants, whether it is to Canada and South Africa, Australia and New Zealand or across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. He charts the rise of Germany and the unification of Italy, and examines the situation in the Balkans in 1878 - all of which had a deep and lasting impact on the geography of the European continent today. Churchill commenced work on this in the 1930s when he was basically unemployed but didn't complete it until 1958, by which time, enhanced by the Second World War, he firmly believed in Britain's 'Special Relationship with the U.S. at the time and in consequence, that country's history is diligently covered. Description: First editions, first impressions, of volumes II-IV, fourth edition of vol. I. Churchill began his history of the British Empire and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until after his retirement in the late 1950s. Description: First editions, first impressions, vol. IV a presentation copy to one of the historical advisers who collaborated on the book, the historian Maurice Shock, inscribed by Churchill on the initial blank "To Mr. Maurice Shock from Winston S. Churchill", the other three volumes with tipped-in printed facsimile presentation slips, as often used by Churchill. Maurice Shock (1926-2018) is credited on the acknowledgements page of the fourth volume: "I desire to record my thanks again to [four other contributors named]. and to Mr Maurice Shock of University College, Oxford, who have since helped in its completion". Shock served in the Intelligence Corps from 1945 to 1948, afterwards taking a place at Balliol College: "Shock graduated with a first in modern Greats and then enrolled as a graduate student at St Antony's College. His promise as a young academic was noted early, not least by Sir Winston Churchill, who invited him to spend a summer in the south of France to help with the writing of his History of the English Speaking Peoples" (ODNB). Churchill wrote to Clementine on 2 October 1956 "Mr. Shock. has done me a very good note on the first Gladstone and Disraeli chapter, and I look forward to receiving another fertile wodge in a fortnight. He is a very nice young man, and I am glad to have had him at the hotel for the week-end" (Gilbert, p. 1212). Throughout the rest of his long career Shock worked in academia, and served as vice-chancellor of the University of Leicester from 1977 to 1987, and as rector of Lincoln College, Oxford from 1987 to 1994. Churchill began his great history of Britain, the British Empire, and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until the latter 1950s, after his final retirement as Prime Minister. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship", the shared heritage and destiny of Britain and the United States. Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history, especially the War of Independence and the Civil War. He worked with teams of academics for each volume, who provided the historical research which he then crafted into a narrative in distinctly Churchillian prose. The work met with acclaim and proved an international best-seller, further vindicating Churchill's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. A masterpiece of readable, popular history, it remains in print today. Cohen A267.1(I)-(IV). Martin Gilbert, Winston S. Churchill, vol. VIII, 1988. 4 volumes, octavo. Description: This mixed First English edition presentation set, in dust jackets, is signed in each volume:"Winston S. Churchill" and hand-dated "1959" in ink. The set was presented by Churchill to his close friend and associate Frank Clarke, who famously hosted Winston and Clementine Churchill at his Miami Beach home in January and February 1946, prior to Churchill's March appearance at Fulton College, Missouri to deliver what would come to be known as his "Iron Curtain" speech. Volume I is the Fifth Printing of the First Edition, dated: January 1958 on the publication page. Volume II is the Second Printing of the First Edition, dated: March 1957. Volumes III and IV are both First Printings, dated 1957 and 1958, respectively. The dust jackets are all virtually mint, unclipped, save for Volume II which is very neatly price-clipped. The books are all slightly damp-stained, with cloth-fading along the board edges and scattered foxing to the fore-edges and prelims. The spines of Volume III and IV are very slightly creased, but the bindings are all otherwise square and tight and the contents fine. Quebec-born COLONEL FRANK W. CLARKE was the scion of a family that owned paper mills in Canada. He worked for Winston Churchill on the staff of The British Gazette during the General Strike of 1926, and was a shipowner, whose vessels served in Allied operations throughout World War II as hospital, supply and troop ships. The Churchills notably stayed at his lakeside cabin for two days of rest following the Quebec Conference. A very personal association for Churchill and a marvelous multiple-signed set, even with the slightly later editions. First English Edition Set (Mixed Printings) (Cohen A267.1[I].d[II.b[III-IV].a) (Woods A138a). 8vo (440 pages, 350 pages, 352 pages & 346 pages. Illustrated with maps and tables.)
