Of this number, they bound up 251 in their cases. .There is no record existing to indicate whether Dodd, Mead sold these books or whether they disposed of them before copies reached the public. Certainly no copy has come to light yet.they sold the remaining 699 sheets to Dreiser. Boni and Liveright.obtained these sheets from Dreiser and bound them into an edition which they issued in September, 1925 using plain blue buckram cases stamped in gold. This is apparently the only Dreiser book of non-fiction chapters of which were not published first in periodicals." Ref.: Orton, 15. Top edge slightly soiled. [Loc.22]

Price: US$124.95 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover. Tall 8vo. John Lane Company, London, 1916. 513 pgs. Illustrated with 31 plates. First Edition/First issue (with The War! The War! On page 173). Bound in green buckram cloth with grey paper cloth with gilt titles present to the spine and the front board. Boards have wear present to the extremities of the boards. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. By 1914, Theodore Dreiser was a successful writer living in New York. He had not been back to his home state in over 20 years. When his friend Franklin Booth approached him with the idea of driving from New York to Indiana, Dreiser's response to Booth was immediate: "All my life I've been thinking of making a return trip to Indiana and writing a book about it." Along the route, Dreiser recorded his impressions of the people and land in words while his traveling companion sketched some of these scenes. In this reflective tale, Dreiser and Booth cross four states to arrive at Indiana and the sites and memories of Dreiser's early life in Terre Haute, Sullivan, Evansville, Warsaw, and his one year at Indiana University. "Because [the book] provides a portrait of the artist as a young man and describes the nation as a mosaic of individual cultures, Dreiser's journey offers several different lessons. Part travelogue, part autobiography, part collection of essays, A Hoosier Holiday lays out the landscape of a nation that ceased to exist once the highway unfurled across the map. Corners a little bumped, light dampstain at the top of the rear board, very good in very good dust jacket with a darkened spot on the front panel, faint tidemark at the crown, and a small chip and short tears. Author's account of an automobile trip back to Indiana, where he had spent his youth. The bulky size of the book makes it difficult to find in nice condition, and very scarce with the jacket.
