John UPDIKE. A Good Place: being a personal account of Ipswich, Massachusetts, written on the occasion of its seventeenth-century day 1972, by a resident, John Updike.. [New York]: Aloe Editions, 1973.

Price: US$193.15 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Wrappers. Some mild creasing, covers slightly faded at very edges. One of "26 lettered copies, signed by the author, for private distribution" [of an edition of 126], printed at the Oliphant Press by Ronald Gordon - this copy, however, unlettered; with the bookplate of Sir Michael Holroyd. "When I first saw Ipswich, I had been married about three hours, was twenty-one years old, and didn't much care where I was . . . A town begins by being anyplace and ends as the Only Place." Questioning the worth of literary biography, in an article for The New York Review of Books in 1999, John Updike singled out the works of "the estimable Michael Holroyd". Holroyd responded characteristically. "I can attack biography from the inside," he wrote. "The truth is that biographers flatter themselves - after all, no one else will."
