Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, limited issue. 182pp. Half cloth and papercovered boards with printed paper spine label. Spine tanned and with a little light spotting, very good. Smith was an engineer by profession (he built the foundations for the Statue of Liberty, the Race Rock Lighthouse, and other notable structures). He was also a successful artist, and late in life turned to writing the many stories for which he was famous in New York society. The title story of this collection involves an amiable tramp who insinuates himself into the home of a well-to-do New Yorker. Others in this collection deal with peripatetic artists and draw on the author's own experiences in Venice and elsewhere.
