The sixth edition.'A General History of Quadrupeds' deals with two-hundred and sixty mammals from across the world, looking at domestic animals, such as horses and cows, as well as animals such as jackals and polecats.This work was popular upon its publication, especially for the fine illustrations.Illustrated with a vignette title page, and many in-text illustrations.Written and illustrated by Thomas Bewick. Bewick was the author of natural history works, including 'A History of British Birds', and an engraver. He was apprenticed and eventually became the partner to Ralph Beilby.One leaf of adverts to the rear. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards and spine, a little heavier to the boards. Head of the spine is lifting a little. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light discolouration to the leather. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little age-toned with some spotting. Good

Description: With numerous fine engravings throughout the text by Thomas Bewick. Quarter leather rebacked with original spine laid on and new endpapers. Foxing throughout. Browning to edges, and rear new endpapers somewhat marked by poor control of the glue, but not affecting the text block. A damp stain has affected the bottom fore-corner of pps 5-36 & 361-402. One leaf has a long closed tear. Ow very good. A couple of interesting comments have been written into the text in ink by an early owner, Charles Crawley, possibly the Reverend Charles Crawley one of whose daughters was Anna Cordelia Crawley. The book is also signed Anna C. Crawley 1870.
