Description: Internally the book is in lovely bright, clean condition with no inscriptions of obvious marks. The boards, although still clean with crisp title lettering and illustration on the front are somewhat soiled at the fore edge and sun faded on the same edge. There is also eveidence of a little water contact on the back cover which, for want of a better description, has a sort of patchy tye dyed effect as a result.The spne lettering is somewhat faded and the spine cloth has a small double tear towards the head. In all though it is still a very decent copy of this scarce edition.

A quarto measuring 12" by 9" with rubbing and wear to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine and two small rents to the cloth at the lower edge of the boards. There is also two small tannish stains to the upper corner of the front board. 105 pages of text illustrated with twelve color plates by H. Willebeek Le Mair. Page 15 has a three inch closed tear to its lower edge which has been professionally repaired.

The FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, first printing, from 1925, this hardcover 4to is bound in publisher's light blue cloth over boards, lettered in stamped gilt to front & spine, with a colorful paper pastedown of a child in a gilt-edged box to center front. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & straight, hinges secure, pages creamy white with moderate edge tanning, foxing to endpapers only. Coloured title vignette and 12 enchanting mounted colour plates of young children, each with a pastel frame and coloured border. Covers very bright, endpapers faintly browned and very lightly marked, slight pale margin foxing to early pages, few small pale splashes in lower margin of 2 facing pages maximum 10 mm (½") (see image 4). Near Fine copy, no inscriptions. This is the first UK edition of these stories which were commissioned by the U.S. publisher David McKay to go with the illustrations by Willebeek Le Mair. Milne lost thousands on the deal as he foolishly accepted a lump sum payment of £200. The book was a huge success and when McKay suggested to Milne another project with Shepard for which he would receive a royalty, Milne told him to 'go to San Francisco and chew gum' (See Thwaite page 286).
