Condition: Good

Description: The covers and spine have edge wear which is worn in a few spots to include the head and heel of the spine. The spine is darkened with the exception of wear a sticker on the spine was removed. The covers have browned around the edges. There is an old style library pocket on the front paste down with the side opening and a date due sheet afixed to the FFE with what looks like a date stamped above it. There is an inscription with a date on the second FFE that is not from the author. There is a name written on the top of the title page and a few library markings on that page. The binding is tight, the pages are clean and the four colored plates are present. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Wood 540 (noting only one colored map). Ripley 244. Smith R48: 'This is the account of a trip to the tropics to collect ornithological specimens in 1892. It is interestingly told, with many photographs and illustrations and with observations of the people as well. A good bibliography is given on Columbia and Cuacao'. There are various lists of birds, with comments, both observed by the author and from others including the 38 species of hummingbirds of Columbia. The author was a lifelong soldier and educator, at Harvard and the U. S. Military Academy. Not in Bennett (American Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books).
