Ernest Hemingway. A Farewell to Arms. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929.

Price: US$275.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, fifth printing with "Reprinted November, 1929" on the copyright page. Measures approximately 7.5" x 5.25", 355 numbered pages. A brand new facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket is included for protection and display. The book is in very good minus condition. Minor wear and staining to the black cloth boards. Gilt title labels on spine and front board are bright and well preserved. Spine is sun-faded. Foxing to front endsheets only. Early in 1918, Ernest Hemingway joined the Italian Red Cross and served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. During his time abroad, Hemingway had two experiences that affected him profoundly and that would later inspire one of his most celebrated novels, A Farewell to Arms. The first occurred on July 8, 1918, when a trench mortar shell struck him while he crouched beyond the front lines with three Italian soldiers. Though Hemingway embellished the story over the years, it is certain that he was transferred to a hospital in Milan, where he fell in love with a Red Cross nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Scholars are divided over Agnes' role in Hemingway's life and writing, but there is little doubt that his relationship with her informed the relationship between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms. What unfolds is a story filled with romance intertwined with moments of bravery, danger, love, and loss. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. Ernest Hemingway's third full-length novel following The Torrents of Spring and The Sun Also Rises. Catherine's parturition (childbirth) was inspired by the intense labor pains of Pauline in the birth of Patrick - Ernest' second wife and second son - and the real-life Kitty Cannell inspired the fictional Helen Ferguson. The priest was based on Don Giuseppe Bianchi, the priest of the 69th and 70th regiments of the Brigata Ancona. 355 pages. Insured post. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall

[x], 355 pp. "A Farewell to Arms is a novel by Ernest Hemingway set during the Italian campaign of World War I. First published in 1929, it is a first-person account of an American, Frederic Henry, serving as a lieutenant ("tenente") in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army. The title is taken from a poem by the 16th-century English dramatist George Peele. The novel, set against the backdrop of World War I, describes a love affair between the expatriate Henry and an English nurse, Catherine Barkley. Its publication ensured Hemingway's place as a modern American writer of considerable stature. The book became his first best-seller, and has been called "the premier American war novel from that debacle World War I." The novel has been adapted a number of times, initially for the stage in 1930; as a film in 1932 and again in 1957, and as a three-part television miniseries in 1966. The 1996 film In Love and War, directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Chris O'Donnell and Sandra Bullock, depicts Hemingway's life in Italy as an ambulance driver in the events prior to his writing of A Farewell to Arms.

Description: Octavo, 355 pp., Nice clean book. Jacket is wrapped in a fresh Mylar protective sleeve. Jacket has edge tears & small edge chips. Small scuffs on paper spine label. First edition book with Scribner's seal on copyright page. Hanneman 8A. Original black cloth, gilt paper printed labels. This book is set during the Italian campaign of World War I. The title is taken from a poem by 16th-century English dramatist George Peele. The publication of A Farewell to Arms cemented Hemingway's stature as a modern American writer, became his first best- seller, and has been described as " the premier American war novel from that debacle World War I." This copy was owned by English author Dennis Wheatley whose prolific output of thrillers and occult novels made him one of the world's best-selling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series was one of the main inspirations for Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. Wheatley's bookplate is inside. His library was dispersed by Blackwells in 1979 and this book was in the catalog.

Hemingway, Ernest. A FAREWELL TO ARMS. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929.

Price: US$3600.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing of the acclaimed tragedy of ill-fated love amidst the fighting of World War I. Based in part on Hemingway's own experiences as an ambulance driver on the Italian front, this novel is a disillusioned indictment of war. Heavily influenced by the modernist approach to fiction developed by Gertrude Stein (especially in THREE LIVES), Hemingway's prose largely directed the critical judgments of style in the second half of the 20th century. "Hemingway's words strike you, each one, as if they were pebbles fetched fresh from a brook. They live and shine, each in its place. So one of his pages has the effect of a brook-bottom into which you look down through the flowing water" (Ford Madox Ford, intro to the Modern Library Edition, 1932). 7.25'' x 5''. Original full black cloth, gold metallic printed paper labels on front board and spine. Original unclipped ($2.50) blue pictorial dust jacket designed by Cleonike Damianakes Wilkins (front flap with misspelling, "Katherine Barclay"). Fore edge machine deckle. No legal disclaimer on [x]. [8], 355, [1] pages. Tiny bookseller ticket to gutter of rear pastedown. Light restoration to corners of dust jacket folds and spine extremities, faint darkening around folds and only very minor spotting. Hinges expertly repaired. Top edge somewhat dusty, a small spot of rubbing to each label. Presents beautifully. Very good plus in very good plus jacket.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, first printing with no disclaimer on p. [x]; in its first issue dust jacket with "Katherine Barclay" misspelling to front flap. Publisher's black cloth with gold paper labels lettered in black to front board and spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket with a drawing by Cleon. Very good or better, with light rubbing to bottom edges of boards and foot of spine, paper labels bright and fresh, light offsetting to endpapers, mild edgewear to front and rear free endpapers, a touch of soiling to bottom edges of endpapers, a hint of dampstaining to fore edge of rear free endpaper, and some tearing to bottom edges of pp. 105 - 134; unclipped dust jacket with light toning to spine and board edges, some creasing and a small closed tear to top edge of front panel, small closed tear to bottom of front panel, light chipping to spine ends (mostly head of spine), small patch of dampstaining to bottom of rear panel, a few very light scratches to fore edge of rear panel, and lightly nicked corners. Overall, an excellent example in its scarce first issue dust jacket. Set in Italy during World War I, A Farewell to Arms tells the story of a romance between the protagonist Frederic Henry, an American serving as a lieutenant in the Italian ambulance corps, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse tending to wounded soldiers. Widely considered one of the best novels to come from the war, the novel is, as the first edition dust jacket proclaims, "the very essence of beauty as twisted and made tragic by war" that "expresses the innermost nature of war." Unlike many of the other war novels by contemporary writers, A Farewell to Arms addresses not only the aftermath of WWI but the events of the war itself, specifically the Italian Front around the Battle of Caporetto of Autumn 1917. Accordingly, it stood out amongst the war novels, becoming Hemingway's first bestseller, and establishing him as a premier American writer. Interestingly, in his 1958 interview with The Paris Review, Hemingway famously remarked, "I rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms, the last page of it, thirty-nine times before I was satisfied."

Description: A much better than very good indeed First Edition, First State copy in its visually pleasing original dust jacket of one of the celebrated author’s most acclaimed novels, called by literary critics everywhere one of the greatest novels of that generation.  A most presentable example of the title with the three points of issue: publisher’s seal on the copyright page, Catherine Barkley misspelled ‘Katherine Barclay’ on the dust jacket front flap, and no disclaimer on page.   A Farewell to Arms is the basis for two film adaptations. (Actually three, since it was remade by director Michael Curtiz in 1951 as Force of Arms with the time period updated.  An unsuccessful attempt starring William Holden and Nancy Olson).  The first film adaptation was the Frank Borzage-directed 1932 version starring Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes; this won the Oscar for Charles Lang’s superb cinematography.  The second was the 1957 Charles Vidor-directed version starring Rock Hudson, Jennifer Jones and Vittorio De Sica. Our First Edition, First state copy is a superb addition to a collector’s library.

Description: First edition, first printing, in the attractive dust jacket designed by Cleonike Damianakes (1895-1979), renowned for her classical-style designs favoured by the Lost Generation writers. The first printing is distinguished by the lack of the legal disclaimer which appeared on p. x in the second and third printings. A Farewell to Arms was based on Hemingway's experiences as an ambulance driver at the Italian Front during the First World War. It was written at the peak of his success and met with wide acclaim. The critic James Aswell offered particularly lavish praise: "I have finished A Farewell to Arms, and am still a little breathless, as people often are after a major event in their lives. If before I die I have three more literary experiences as sharp and exciting and terrible as the one I have just been through, I shall know it has been a good world" (cited in Bloom, p. 5). Ernest Hemingway. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, First Trade Edition, in First State Dust Jacket, 1929. Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1929.

Price: US$7250.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Hemingway, Ernest. A Farewell to Arms. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First trade edition, first issue. In the original first-state dust jacket and publisher’s black cloth boards. Presented in a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell case, with raised bands, gilt tooling, and titles to the spine. Presented is a first trade edition, first issue of Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. The book was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in New York, in September of 1929. This first printing is presented with its original first issue dust jacket. The dust jacket, as designed by Cleonike Damianakes Wilkins, is considered by many to be one of the greatest of the 20th century and rivals even The Great Gatsby in its collectibility. Set during World War I, A Farewell to Arms tells the story of a young American Lieutenant serving as an ambulance driver in Italy struggling through love and war. The story is told through first person narration detailing many aspects of war that would have been very familiar to readers at the time, as the book was published only 11 years after the 1918 armistice. The simple, direct tone his character uses when giving his unromanticized account of the war later defined Hemingway’s writing style. A Farewell to Arms is loosely based on Hemingway’s own experiences. The author briefly served overseas as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army, sustained injuries, and met a nurse who he eventually proposed marriage to but was declined. The novel’s post-war disillusionist subject assigned Hemingway to the “Lost Generation” of Modernist artists. A Farewell to Arms was Hemingway’s most successful publishing venture to date. Charles Scribner's Sons issued seven impressions of the novel in the short time between September and December of 1929, with over 100,000 volumes sold. The novel secured Hemingway’s place as a popular American author and became his first bestselling book. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American author and journalist. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy of words and dry understatement, strongly influenced 20th-century fiction, as did his life of adventure and his public image. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Hemingway published seven novels, six short story collections, and two non-fiction works during his lifetime; a further three novels, four collections of short stories, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are now considered classics of American literature. The book’s striking dust jacket design was illustrated by the artist Cleonike Damianakes Wilkins, who worked under the pen name of Cleon. Wilkins was known for her distinctive fusion of Art Deco and Hellenistic styles. She designed the dust jackets for Hemingway’s earlier The Sun Also Rises in 1926 and his later publication In Our Time in 1930, as well as Conrad Aiken’s Great Circle, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s All the Sad Young Men,and Zelda Fitzgerald’s Save Me the Waltz. Wilkins was chosen by Hemingway’s celebrated editor at Scribner’s, Maxwell Perkins. In order to differentiate Hemingway’s tale from other, competing WWI novels on the bookshop shelves, Perkins sought to widen its appeal through the dust jacket. The resulting design was Wilkins’ interpretation of Sandro Botticelli’s epic oil painting “Venus and Mars,” and the triumph of love over war. Her classical figures appealed to a female audience and allayed the more shocking elements and language in Hemingway’s blunt story of war. CONDITION: Very good condition overall. 8vo. Original first issue dust jacket with “Katharine Barclay” misspelled for Catherine Barkley on front flap. Dust jacket is price-clipped. Small repairs to top of front panel and spine of dust jacket. They had planned to marry, but she ultimately rejected his proposal when he returned to the United States. While not as strictly autobiographical as The Sun Also Rises, Farewell to Arms continued Hemingway's practice of blending real, lived experience with fiction: a significant inspiration for the novel was a collection of wartime correspondence between a friend (Frederic Agate) and his wife. HEMINGWAY, Ernest.. A Farewell to Arms.. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929, 1929.

Price: US$9746.59 + shipping

Description: First edition, first printing, in the attractively preserved dust jacket designed by Cleonike Damianakes (1895-1979), renowned for her classical-style cover art for Lost Generation writers. The first printing is without the legal disclaimer which appeared in the second and third printings on p. x. Based on Hemingway's experiences as an ambulance driver at the Italian Front during the First World War, it was written at the peak of his success and met with wide acclaim. 5). Grissom A.8.1.a; Hanneman 8a. Harold Bloom, ed., Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms, 2009. Octavo. Original black cloth, printed gold paper labels on spine and front cover, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket by Cleonike Damianakes. Brentano's bookseller ticket on rear pastedown. Spine head bumped, faint ring stain on rear cover, lightly affecting jacket, contents clean; bright, unclipped jacket a little rubbed and nicked, singular small chip and closed tear, faint splash mark on front flap: a near-fine copy in like jacket.

Hemingway, Ernest. A Farewell To Arms.. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929.

Price: US$40000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue of this early Hemingway classic, which established him among the American masters. Octavo, original black cloth. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "To Eleanor Havre from her friend Ernest Hemingway Paris October 18 1929." Near fine in a very good first state dust jacket with the misspelling "Katharine Barclay" in the blurb on the front flap. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield—weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion—this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. It is the basis for the 1932 film bearing the same name directed by Frank Borzage and starring Gary Cooper, Helen Hayes, and Adolphe Menjou.
