Description: Published by Chatto and Windus in 1955, here is the first hardback printing of William Faulkner's A FABLE. Red cloth binding, gilt lettering, 393 pages, the book is in very good condition with some light rubbing to the spine, some moderate browning to the end papers and the name of a previous owner (revered Oxford scholar Anthony Cockshut) written in pencil to the front free end paper. Anthony has also made a few pencil markings right at the rear of the book. The dust jacket is very good with some minor edge chipping, some fading to the base of the spine and some light staining/ finger marking mainly to the rear of the jacket.

Toned, Andrew Sarnowski's 1961 inscription to himself in red biro on ffep, noting: "A present to myself again. broke again: it was good while it lasted!". Good+ Faulkner's WWI novel, which took more than a decade and a tremendous effort to write, was the first title to win both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. The author had had high aspirations for it, describing it as "the best work of my life and maybe of my time".

The book has a Foyle's sticker to the inside front cover, with a spine lean, spine bumping, and fading to the top of the spine due to loss from the dust jacket. The dust jacket shows general wear and ageing, including internally, with losses and nicks to the spine ends and the extremities. A good copy overall for a book of this age. (See pictures). The author was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature for 1955.

Jacket has faults - namely edge/shelf wear, few marks, mild foxing, patchy loss (mainly to head/tail of spine and to corners), creasing/rubbing to edges, patchy browning (including to spine), pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine, pushing/bumping to corners, few tears, is a little grubby and is in only fair condition. Boards are very good (having been well protected by the jacket) with a little pushing/bumping to corners, the odd small mark, a little patchy fading, the odd minor bump/rub to edges and a little pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. End-papers tanned. Top of pages slightly dusty with the odd small mark/spot of foxing. Odd small mark to page edges and bottoms. Neat gift inscription and date in pen to front end-paper. Pages bit tanned. Very occasional small mark/spot of foxing to pages. No other faults. All books described honestly and accurately.
