Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Hardcover with dust jacket, published by McDowell Obolensky, 1957. The dust jacket is intact, though it has been price clipped at the top corner of the front flap. Iconic cover design by Alfred Manso. This is a 1957 second state, fourth printing copy with the correction made to page 80 changing the word "walking" to 'waking". Dust jacket has been protected with a clear, removable cover, so there is just a minimal amount of edge wear to the head and heel of the spine, as well as being price clipped. Blue cloth covered boards with the title and author name on the spine and front board as well as a blue-green mountain design on the front board. Spine lettering of the title is somewhat worn. Boards are flat and the corners are not creased or bumped, just minimal dots of edge wear at the tips of the corners. Wear mark on the ffep from what was probably the removable of a former owner's label, about 3 inches across, 1/2 inch tall. The title page retains the blue typography of the first edition. 340 pages, blue topstain appears to be only slightly faded. The binding is tight and square. A beautiful copy of this classic of American Literature. This is not a remainder, not a library copy. Published posthumously, awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1958, adapted as a play and film titled 'All The Way Home'. Attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory.

A Death in the Family is an autobiographical novel by author James Agee, set in Knoxville, Tennessee. He began writing it in 1948, but it was not quite complete when he died in 1955. It was edited and released posthumously in 1957 by editor David McDowell. Agee's widow and children were left with little money after Agee's death and McDowell wanted to help them by publishing the work. Agee won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1958 for the novel. The novel was included onTime's 2005 list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. The novel is based on the events that occurred to Agee in 1915 when his father went out of town to see his own father, who had suffered a heart attack. During the return trip, Agee's father was killed in a car accident. The novel provides a portrait of life in Knoxville, Tennessee, showing how such a loss affects the young widow, her two children, her atheist father and the dead man's alcoholic brother. Description: OCLC: "On a sultry summer night in 1915, Jay Follet leaves his house in Knoxville, Tennessee, to tend to his father, whom he believes is dying. The summons turns out to be a false alarm, but on his way back to his family, Jay has a car accident and is killed instantly. Dancing back and forth in time and braiding the viewpoints of Jay's wife, brother, and young son, Rufus, Agee creates an overwhelmingly powerful novel of innocence, tenderness and loss."First edition (first issue with "Walking" at page 80) bound in blue cloth faded along the book edges and previous owner name and light water stain to the verso of the edge worn dust jacket - see photos. Complete in 339 bright pages. A Pulitzer winner in 1958. From the American First Editions collection of Donald C. Scriven (1948-2019). Don relished points of issue and the primacy of the dust jacket but above all he loved the literature!
