A very nice copy of an early edition. Daniel Carter Beard was an American illustrator, author, youth leader, Georgist and social reformer who founded the Sons of Daniel Boone in 1905, which later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. With Mark Twain's approval, Beard's illustrations for A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court were a Georgist interpretation of the story. He was blacklisted by magazines and publishers because of his association with the controversial anti-church, anti-industrialist, anti-imperialist content of Twain’s work, and because some of his illustrations were seen as inflammatory. Twain however was pleased with Beard’s work, saying, “Dan Beard is the only man who can correctly illustrate my writings for he not only illustrates the text, but he also illustrates my thoughts.”

Twain, Mark. [S. Clemens]. A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT. Rose Publishing, Toronto, 1890.

Price: US$375.00 + shipping

Description: First Canadian Edition. Hardcover. Twain, Mark [Clemens, Samuel Langhorne]. A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT. Toronto: Rose Publishing, 1890. [Copyright 1889]. Decorated publisher's brown cloth. First Canadian Edition. Very similar to the American edition including the patterned endpapers though slightly different in size & some details. BAL 3429: First state of page 59 as seems to be true of all of the later contemporary Canadian editions; perfect type on page 72. [McBride and Ahearn are incorrect in their assessments of the true First Canadian Edition which should have three figures on the cover, the "Rose Publishing Co." imprint on the spine, & 1890 on the title page, all present with this example. Deposited on Dec. 11, 1889, six days after the American Edition. This is a very good copy showing modest use; the hinges strengthened, & with a neat tape repair to a tear that affected several pages. An interesting copy of this unusual edition. The novel explains the tale of Hank Morgan, a 19th-century resident of Hartford, Connecticut who, after a blow to the head, awakens to find himself inexplicably transported back in time to early medieval England at the time of the legendary King Arthur. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was originally titled: A Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some early editions are titled A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur.
