"In the summer of 1961, while camping in southern Idaho with his wife and daughter, Brautigan completed the novels A Confederate General From Big Sur and Trout Fishing in America. A Confederate General from Big Sur was his first published novel and met with little critical or commercial success. But when Trout Fishing in America was published in 1967, Brautigan was catapulted to international fame. Literary critics labeled him the writer most representative of the emerging countercultural youth-movement of the late 1960s, even though he was said to be contemptuous of hippies. Trout Fishing in America has sold over 4 million copies worldwide." (from Wikipedia)

Description: His first novel, after several small press poetry collections. A bit of staining to the joints and top edge; near fine in a very good, spine and edge-darkened jacket with a small corner chip at the crown. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

Brautigan, Richard. A Confederate General from Big Sur.. Grove Press, Inc., New York, 1964.

Price: US$2000.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of Brautigan's first published novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Richard Brautigan on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket painting by Larry Rivers. Jacket photograph by Erik Weber. A very nice example. Written when Brautigan was 29 years old, A Confederate General from Big Sur follows the story of Lee Mellon, a man who believes himself to be a descendant of a Confederate general and seeks the truth of his own modern-day war against the status quo of the modern United States in light of the Confederacy's past struggle with the Union. Brautigan completed the novel in 1961 but it was not published until January 22, 1965. The novel sold poorly and soon went out of print but was later republished when Brautigan developed something of a cult following, largely based on his reputation developed in response to his next major work, the novella Trout Fishing in America.
