First Edition. Included is Clarendon’s Vindication, written in 1668 in answer to the charges of impeachment against him (his popularity had been on a quick and steady decline, largely due to his attempts to restrict the authority of the House of Commons – the rest of his life was spent in exile), Reflections upon several Christian Duties, Divine and Moral, dialogues on the want of respect due to age and concerning education, and Contemplations and Reflections upon the Psalms of David, applying those Devotions to the Troubles of the Times. Description: [iv], 770 pages of text. Modern maroon cloth binding with minimal shelfwear; printed paper label is rubbed. Final page torn, creased, soiled, with loss to margins, with old repair (no adhesive stain). Remainder of text including title page is relatively clean and bright, but the majority of pages have a faint shadow of damp-staining in margins. Illustrated with several woodcut initials, head and tail pieces. Contains "A Discourse, by Way of Vindication of my self from the Charge of High-Treason, with which I was charged by the House of Commons, November, 1667" and "Contemplations and Reflections upon the Psalms of David, applying those Devotions to the Troubles of the Times" (29 works in all).
