Condition: Very Good

Description: First U.S. edition. Some darkening and rubbing to cover, but very good. Interesting literary association. Inscribed "Chas. F. McClumpha from Jonathan Sturges July 22, 1885." Sturges, and American born author and writer, was a close friend of both James McNeill Whistler and the author Henry James, and had correspondence with both men. Sturges also was in some way the original of Little Bilham in The Ambassadors by James (1903). Charles Flint McClumpha, whose bookplate appears on the pastedown endpaper, was an author of scholarly books. Also tipped in is a small plate reproducing a handwritten note by Stevenson about friendship, "printed for Edwin Osgood Grover and a few of his friends." A nice copy of a classic, with evidence of early appreciation of Stevenson among literary circles. Henry James was a close friend of Stevenson, and was praised in one of his poems.
