Description: 16 x 23cm oatmeal coloured cloth with pictorial image and gilt titles to the front and spine. Top edge gilt other edges uncut. Art Nouveau endpapers, (xii), 152 (4)pp, (8) publisher's catalogue with 9 colour plates including frontispiece and title page. There are over 100 black and white illustrations by Charles Robinson, both full page and within the text. A little light marking to the rear board and a hint of cockling. A hint of toning to the spine and light rubbing to the front board and spine tips. The four corners are a little bruised. The binding is firm and square. Internally there is some toning to the endpapers and the uncut edges but otherwise the book is very clean and without name, inscription or bookplate. All in all a very good copy of this charmingly illustrated gift edition and the first book illustrated by Charles Robinson. Some wear to extremities and browning of endpapers, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 9 colour plates, including frontispiece and title page and by black and white drawings in text. Pictorial endpapers. Stevenson's collection of sixty four poems for children, first appeared under the title, Penny Whistles, in 1885. Numerous later Illustrated editions followed and this version was illustrated by Charles Robinson (1870-1937). A prolific book illustrator, Robinson had first illustrated the title in 1895 in black and white and it was also the first full book he illustrated. [1908]. 8vo.; publisher's taupe pictorial cloth, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, Art Nouveau pictorial endpapers in colour; pp. [xiv], 3-152 + [iv] + [viii], adverts.; with pictorial title-page, frontispiece, and 7 other fine and delicate coloured plates together with line drawings throughout by Robinson; a beautiful and exceptionally bright copy, externally fine and fresh, internally also unusually clean and attractive with a few fox-spots to endpapers at inner gutter and one or two prelims, with a neat and early gift inscription, dated 1912, to front blank but otherwise bright, without signs of handling. First colour-illustrated edition by Charles Robinson with the top edges gilded and the pagination error (page 7 numbered 13 and 13 numbered 7, with no loss of text, continuity, or integrity). Charles Robinson was the first artist to turn his hand to illustrating this classic children's book. His first treatment of it, with wonderful Art Nouveau illustrations throughout in sinuous line, was published in 1896 (see above).
