Description: First Edition of what is apparently the first book by this important graphic designer and illustrator, produced while still a student at Cooper Union. Chwast was one of the founders of Push Pin Studios, and the influence of Chwast and his contemporaries was profound. There are nine full page, hand-colored linocuts, each preceded by printed quotations, largely pacifist in nature. The oblong book is hand-bound with a cloth spine and decorative paper-covered boards with a printed title label. An excellent copy with only very slight binding wear. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.

Description: Oblong Octavo, unpaginated. In Very Good minus condition. Bound in quarter green cloth with decorative paper-covered boards. Front board lacking printed title label, but with a light glue-stain where it was applied. Some offsetting from the linocuts. Water-staining to the fore edge of the Battle of Vonchio and lightly to the Battle of Blenheim. Shelved case 0. Printed three years after Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast founded the influential Push Pin Studios, this collection of linocuts by Chwast depicts a mix of nine historical battles juxtaposed with pacifist quotes. 1369208. Slim oblong 8vo, decorated patterned paper boards with a printed title label on upper cover; plain green cloth spine. New York The 6x9 Press, 1957. First edition. Boards are just a touch darkened at edges, still a near fine copy of this scarce book. An early work by Chwast, an AIGA Medal recipient and major influence on modern graphic design and typography. In this work, Chwast illustrates nine battles -- from Marathon in 490 B.C. to Ypres in the first World War -- accompanied by quotations which reflect his pacifist philosophy.
