Shakespeare, William Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

High school students across the world may groan when they are presented with copies of Romeo and Juliet to read (we all remember struggling to understand the Elizabethan prose), but there is no getting away from the Bard. His influence has led to the profusion and range of literature that we enjoy today, and his plays continue to be read, performed and enjoyed 400 years after his death. Few contemporary writers can dream of such longevity. Such is Shakespeare's influence on wider society even his lexicon is still with us today, with hundreds of everyday words and phrases introduced into the English language through his writing. Shakespeare's original work is off limits to collectors, except to those with extremely deep pockets. In 2001, a near perfect copy of Shakespeare's first folio sold, at Christie's in New York, for $6.1 million. A similar price was achieved in 2006 at a Sotheby's auction in London. Not to worry! With four centuries of publications to choose from there is something Shakespeare out there for every budget.Second folios of his work start at around $250,000, late 17th century editions can reach $30,000 and copies of individual plays published in the 18th century are up to $5,000. Even as late as the start of the last century, there are some interesting and important first editions (in some cases full collections) available for just a few hundred dollars. The message is clear. Whatever your preferred genre, and whoever your favourite author, it was Shakespeare who set the standard in literature, leaving us with a lasting legacy of iconic plays, sonnets, prose (and alliterations). When it comes to arguably the greatest writer of all time, how can one pass up an opportunity to hold at least one collectible Shakespeare volume on her bookshelf.
