Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel De Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

Written more than 400 years ago, the tale of Don Quixote is still regarded as one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time. Many experts see it as a foundation for the modern novel, as it is one of the first great works to develop its main characters in front of the reader rather than simply relaying a series of events.

Cervantes' work is filled with different themes, but in essence Don Quixote is a satirical novel - a parody of the chivalrous tales of heroism that preceded it and an observation of the ironies that exist in human nature. The character of Quixote is something of an anti-hero, an unknown nobleman who has been driven insane by tales of historic chivalry and decides to set out to right the wrongs of the world as a knight of days past may have done.

Don Quixote was originally produced in two editions published a decade apart - fewer than 20 of the original editions are thought to exist. Subsequently printed in a single edition, there are numerous reprints and translations available. A 1617 Spanish edition of the second part of the novel can realize up to $20,000 alone while a complete 1652 English translation can fetch upwards of $3,500.

Of course, Cervantes wrote other works that would be of interest to a collector; however in Don Quixote he has created an enduring classic that was the original source for many writing techniques still employed today. As a story Don Quixote is still very readable; as a piece of collectible literary history it is impossible to ignore.
