A Mind in Revolt: Leonard Baskin

Leonard Baskin is an artist whose name commands deep respect from many illustrative and figurative artists today. A true Renaissance artist, Leonard Baskin was self-taught for much of his career, continuing to expand his artistic repertoire from prints to monumental woodcuts, sculpture, illustrations, and paintings. Working through the early, mid, and later part of the twentieth century he never succumbed to the flavour of the time - Abstract Expressionism, or to what he deemed the 'cult of specialization'.

Leonard Baskin worked hard to push his art into new areas, and as such was one of the few artists who also operated a successful printing press, which worked to commission high-end pieces, notably by friends Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath. His Press is still able to take commissions to this day, and is known as the Gehenna Press.

The son of an orthodox rabbi, Leonard Baskin's work was understandably learned and erudite, with references to Biblical themes, mythology, and classical sources. He never agreed that pure subjective emotion - the basis of Abstract Expressionism was an authentic 'proof' of artistic endeavour, and as such remained unashamedly Realist and Modern in his outlook.

The Galerie St. Etienne in New York is the foremost gallery associated with preserving and making available the works of the Gehenna Press to the public.
