From Humble Beginnings: The Golden Cockerel Press

From such humble beginnings, great things are achieved. So say the wise, and perhaps they were considering the Golden Cockerel Press when they intoned their words of wisdom! The Golden Cockerel Press started in 1920 in a fit of idealism by Hal Taylor, his wife and two others with the majority of their inheritance and private funds to invest in a printing press. Their stated desire to set up a community co-operative endeavor to publish their literary magazine. Obviously inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement and William Morris, their idealism was energetic, well-received by sadly short lived in the face of the approaching World War.

The Golden Cockerel Press went through four successive directors, the second being Robert Gibbings. It was during this period (1924-33) that Golden Cockerel's 'golden age' can be seen, with Gibbings luckily being in contact with some of the foremost woodcutters and illustrators of his generation. Later directors took the press further away from its humble beginnings, before eventually Christopher Sandford and Thomas Yoseloff introduced color plates and lithography to their repertoire, causing a stir in the English Private Press movement.

However, despite their sometimes rocky road to success, and the high amount of directors, Golden Cockerel have remained as one of the best-loved of the English Private Presses. Specializing in childrens' stories, fables, and fantastical tales, the Golden Cockerel has also been fortuitous to have, at any one time, some of the best type-designers and illustrators working under their auspices.

If collecting Golden Cockerel books, it is perhaps best to focus upon which period interests you the most, with the early Hal Taylor and Robert Gibbings being the most sought-after. Their dedication to the art direction (and use of color) in each edition make their first editions truly collectible. The most sought after would include signed copies or dedications on the behalf of the authors, which, if in near-perfect condition can reach into the hundreds of dollars at auction value.
