Francis Parkman had the extraordinary ability to produce books that are now acclaimed as literary works as well as important historical accounts. As well as detailed accounts of American history, Parkman's work also extended to expansive descriptions of his journeys in various parts of the USA and the relationships he developed with indigenous tribes.
Written over a period of nearly thirty years, in seven volumes, France and Britain in America, charts the history of military campaigns and battle for control of territories between the then great European rivals.
Parkman's debut work, The Oregan Trail, was published in book form in 1849 following its successful serialization. It tells Parkman's story of his time spent hunting buffalo with a tribe of Sioux. Today, first editions can realize up to $600 at auction. Complete collections of France and Britain in America published by Little, Brown and Co. are available for around $500.
