Eragny Press Annotated Bibliography & Selected Collectible Books

Handmade Antiquary: The Eragny Press of Lucien Pissarro

Sometimes it is hard to walk in the footsteps of ones parents. This is the lesson that young printmaker Lucien Pissarro learned after his father, Carmille Pissarro the famous French Impressionist warned him against his interest in the British private press Arts and Crafts movement.

The Eragny Press was borne out of Lucien's desire to recreate that antique feel of wood-cut printing, specializing in classic and antiquarian short tales such as Grimm's fairy tales, Francis Bacon's monologues, scripts from the bible and short verse. Although operating throughout the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth, the sensibilities of the Press instead turned to an earlier age, with decorative borders reminiscent of the Renaissance, romance and fantasy.

Today the Eragny Press is highly recognized as one of the leading art private presses of its times, with exhibitions regularly displayed in such august institutions as the Ashmolean Museum and various prestigious universities. Needless to say, all printed works are highly sought after.

If collecting the Eragny Press, the best attention would be paid to the letter-plates indicating providence, and to such details as intact binding, serviceable cover and the vibrancy of the colors used inside. It is also worth keeping such items in protective cases and/or atmospheres to keep their age well. Such volumes can be sell at auction in the order of hundreds of dollars.
