Emory Lieut. Col. William H. Notes of a Military Reconnaissance

First Edition Prices, Values and Auction Results

Engineer and scientist, as well as earning the eventual title of General, William Emory mapped and compiled topographical details of land obtained in the New Mexico and Arizona areas, and Southern California. In Notes of a Military Reconnaissance he not only reported on the terrain, he chronicled details of Native American inhabitation of the lands and societal interactions and in addition identified plant life in these areas. This collection of extraordinary maps and descriptions of the environment was published as a first edition in 1848 (Washington) by Wendell and Van Benthuysen. The large House of Representatives issue in good condition (614 pp.) when included with the large folding map in a separate folder can sell at auction for $2200-2500. andnbsp;Second Senate issues may fetch $1500 and even mixed issues (House and Senate) can command $1000.

We collected a sample of 38 auction results of Emory, Lieut. Col. William H.'s Notes of a Military Reconnoissance, from Fort Leavenworth, in Missouri, to San Diego, in California, Including Part of the Arkansas, Del Norte, and Gila Rivers from 3 different auction houses. The lowest overall price realized in our sample was $62 and the highest overall price realized was $3286. The overall average price was $723 and the median price realized for the book was $510. There were 14 auctions (42%) with a price realized below the low estimate, 6 auctions (18%) exceeding the high estimates, and 13 auctions (39%) within the range of the low and high estimates. Auctions of interest include: a PBA sale on December 03, 2015 of a 1848 - Wendell and Van Benthuysen edition for $2040 that described as "fine or nearly so, one of the best copies [we've handled]"; a PBA sale on April 02, 2015 of a 1848 - Wendell and Van Benthuysen edition for $2400 that includes very large folding map not originally included, and a custom case; a Bonhams sale on June 27, 2006 of a 1848 - Wendell edition for $3286 that presentation inscription from Jefferson Davis dated April 16, 1848;
